Step back into Nalini Singh's world and see a future
earth as only she can imagine it -- a new earth where three
races fight for power; the Humans, the Changelings (shape
shifters) and the Psy, the current dominant race. The Psy,
bred for their many psychic abilities, control commerce in
the modern world, and with great amounts of money at their
disposal, they are in a position to keep the other two
races firmly in check.
Reproducing purely to create desirable genetic offspring,
the Psy have developed their brains a hundredfold, yet
their hearts and souls leave much to be desired. All
emotion is drummed out of them at an early age by constant
conditioning. And any Psy displaying an "unhealthy"
emotional side is subject to a rehabilitation procedure
that results in the total loss of the individual and leaves
only a basic functioning automation behind.
A member of the powerful PsyClan NightStar, Faith NightStar
is an extremely valuable asset to her family. Literally
worth billions, Faith is considered the most powerful F-
Psy, or foreseer, of her generation. Although she's able to
predict business trends with amazing accuracy, Faith, like
all F-Psy, is considered fragile and unstable. It's
whispered that all F-Psy eventually go insane. Faith fears
she may be losing her mind when she begins to have a series
of visions that are not business related. She's begun to
dream about a string of horrific murders. But she isn't
sure if these murders are actual events that will come to
pass, or if the dreams are a sign of her eventual descent
into madness. When her sister is savagely murdered, Faith
feels responsible. Despite her Psy training, she wants
revenge. Seeking answers, Faith escapes her carefully
guarded compound and sets off for DarkRiver Territory, a
Changeling domain, in search of a rogue Psy who escaped
their clinical world months before.
Faith finds answers, but not the ones she came looking for.
Instead, she learns the truth about the control the Psy
force has on society, all society, and not always for the
common good. Atrocities are happening that the Psy council
is well aware of and yet turns a blind eye to. Faith hears
much of the truth from a fierce and angry male Changeling
jaguar named Vaughn D'Angelo -- a Changeling male who
excites her senses and long-buried emotions. Faith longs to
experience the new sensations suddenly bombarding her, many
of them coming from Vaughn. At the same time, she fears all
the new input will short circuit her and leave her broken
or worse.
A loner by nature, Vaughn has never felt the need to bond,
to mate with one woman. Preferring to live alone, Vaughn
satisfies his sexual desires with women who are like-minded
and then moves on. His reaction to Faith shakes him to the
core. He has no reason to trust the icy Psy; no reason to
help her; and certainly no reason to want her to the point
of delirium -- but he does. And Vaughn almost always gets
what he wants. Eventually, Faith puts her fears aside and
comes to him. And although no one realizes it yet, Faith
has the power to change the world as they know it. But will
she stay with her lover in his world or will fear and the
promise of power in her own society drive her back to hers?
VISIONS OF HEAT is the second book in a fantastic
paranormal romance series! Singh puts her own unique spin
on psychics and shape shifters. And although we haven't met
any human main characters yet, I feel sure they will pop up
in future books. I can't wait to see how they will fit into
Singh's new world.
Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being
tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign
for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly
sought after ability to predict the future. Then the
visions show her something even more dangerous-aching
need...exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so
fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she
yearns to embrace could be the end of her.
Changeling Vaughn D'Angelo can take either man or jaguar
form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly
drawn to Faith. The jaguar's instinct is to claim this
woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no
argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to
pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could
snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who
need Faith's sight for their own purposes. They must keep
her silenced-and keep her from Vaughn...
