Science Fiction

Oonagh von Bek is literally swallowed up by the earth outside her family home in Yorkshire. The granddaughter of Elric, the White Wolf, and Oona, the Dreamthief's Daughter, Oonagh embarks on the adventure of her young life. Upon arriving in the subterranean World Below (or Middle March), Oonagh makes the acquaintance of Lord Renyard, a man-sized fox and Lord of the Deep City. Lord Renyard protects and guides Oonagh on her journeys through the Middle March and in time introduces her to an oracle who reveals her destiny to her. Powerful and dangerous men pursue Oonagh in the World Below. Prince Gaynor the Damned and his crony, Klosterheim, seek to kidnap the child for an apocalyptic purpose of their own. Gaynor, once a Knight of the Balance, is now corrupted. He seeks to undo and recreate the Multiverse. He believes his end can be accomplished once he has Oonagh and another child, the White Wolf's son, under his control. Elric and Oona have also followed Oonagh; both have crossed dimensions and time in their attempt to aid the child. Elric, a prisoner in his own dimension, sets out on a dream quest in an attempt to reclaim his sword, Stormbringer, to prevent Oonagh from being used by Gaynor and his allies and to protect the balance of Law and Chaos in the Multiverse. Always a brilliant wordsmith, Moorcock's new novel is one of the best in his Eternal Champions series. His ideas are always fresh, always entertaining. His narrative goes from adventure to philosophy with ease. No one writes fantasy the way Moorcock does.

SUMMARY

One summer day in Yorkshire, young Oonagh von Bek finds herself on an extraordinary and perilous adventure. The earth outside her family home breaks open and she is chased into the subterranean realms of the Middle March by a pair of dangerous men. Her grandmother and grandfather-Oona, the Dreamthief's Daughter, and Elric, the last sorcerer of Melniboné-follow, encountering other important avatars of the Eternal Champion and seeking Elric's son. Fanning out across the infinite realms of existence and time, they hope to stop Oonagh's would-be kidnappers, Gaynor the Damned and his allies. All paths will converge in the dark empire of Granbretan, a land of cruel tyranny and wicked magic, where defilers and murderers plan the ultimate arrogance: to re- create the entire Multiverse-and replace the Cosmic Balance with themselves as eternal overlords...
