Excerpt of Elementary, She Read by Vicki Delany

โ€œHowโ€™d you know the kitchenโ€™s been ransacked?โ€ Estrada said.
โ€œI didnโ€™t tell you that, and you canโ€™t see into the kitchen
from the entrance.โ€

โ€œDo you doubt everything youโ€™re told, Detective Estrada?
Must be a very difficult way to go through life.โ€

She bristled.

โ€œIt was perfectly obvious,โ€ I said. โ€œI smelled flour, tea,
and sugar the moment we came in. Those are normal scents in
anyoneโ€™s house, but tonight theyโ€™re of a strength that
indicates theyโ€™ve been recently dumped from their
containers. Overlaid with the odor of rotting vegetables, by
which I assume the fridge door has been left open. I keep
meaning to eat that kale because itโ€™s supposed to be
healthy, but I really donโ€™t care for it.

โ€œWe can also assume that our intruder is a nonsmoker and
doesnโ€™t apply perfume or aftershave regularly.
Unfortunately, it hasnโ€™t rained for several days, although
the forecast did call for some, so they didnโ€™t track mud
into the house. The flour! An unforgiveable oversight on my
part. You will, of course, want to take casts of footprints
that have tracked through the spilled flour and sugar.โ€

โ€œIt didnโ€™t get on the floor,โ€ Estrada said. โ€œBut itโ€™s all
over the counter.โ€

โ€œAs the front door appears to be untampered with, and I
donโ€™t hand spare keys for my house to all and sundry, Iโ€™ll
assume our intruder came in through the back door. Therefore
the kitchen would be the logical first place to search.โ€

โ€œEnough, Gemma,โ€ Jayne whispered to me.

โ€œI only want to point out the obvious facts.โ€ Iโ€™ve been told
on more than one occasion that some people donโ€™t understand
my attention to detail and thus misunderstand the
conclusions I draw from it. I have tried to stop, but I
might as well stop thinking. And this didnโ€™t seem like a
suitable time in which to stop thinking.

โ€œThe back doorโ€™s been forced open, yes,โ€ Estrada said. โ€œIโ€™ll
admit, that was a good guess.โ€

I was about to inform her that I never guess, but Jayne
elbowed me in the ribs.

โ€œI still think,โ€ Estrada continued, โ€œyou know way too much
about what went on here when you were supposedly not at
home. Never mind the dog. She doesnโ€™t seem to have done much
to frighten off an intruder. She didnโ€™t have to be locked up
or restrained while this person broke in and searched your
house.โ€

โ€œThat was no curious incident,โ€ I said. โ€œSheโ€™s a pet, not a
guard dog. What does she care if someone tosses my living
room as long as they donโ€™t attempt to abscond with all the
dog biscuits?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve asked the fingerprint techs to come over right away,โ€
Ryan said. โ€œThis is your home after all. In the meantime, I
need you and Jayne to remain in this room.โ€

โ€œIt scarcely matters,โ€ I said. โ€œMy fingerprints are
everywhere. This is, as you pointed out, my house.โ€

Ryanโ€™s phone rang. He lifted one hand, telling us all to
stay in place, and answered. As he listened, his eyes opened
wide. He let out a low whistle, turned, and walked to the
window, so his back was to us. The sneak! He didnโ€™t want me
reading his face. โ€œIs that so? Looks genuine? Very
interesting. Take them into custody. Iโ€™m coming back.โ€ At
last, the police searching the hotel room must have found
the jewelry. Took them long enough.

He put the phone away. โ€œWeโ€™re done here, Estrada. For now.โ€

โ€œSir,โ€ she said, with a glance at me that I didnโ€™t care for
one little bit. โ€œIf I might have a word.โ€

They went into the hall. Estrada closed the door behind her.
I righted the overturned desk chair and took a seat. Violet
settled onto the floor beside me. Jayne tiptoed across the
room and stood with her ear pressed to the door.
Fortunately, she heard them returning and leapt out of the
way in time to avoid being knocked senseless.

โ€œYou two are not to leave town without my permission,โ€ Ryan
said.

I nodded.

โ€œDonโ€™t talk to the press,โ€ Estrada said. โ€œOr anyone else
about this.โ€

โ€œWe wonโ€™t,โ€ Jayne said.

โ€œWeโ€™ll see ourselves out.โ€ At that moment the doorbell rang.
Ryan opened it to admit a man and a woman with badges pinned
to their shirts. They carried bags of equipment.

โ€œDo this room first,โ€ Ryan said, โ€œthen the kitchen and the
upstairs bedroom.โ€

โ€œYou got it, Detective.โ€

โ€œWhat about my car?โ€ I said.

โ€œTake a cab,โ€ Estrada said.

โ€œIโ€™ll put the dog outside,โ€ Ryan said. โ€œOtherwise, sheโ€™ll be
in the way. Come on, girl. Gemma, get that lock on the back
door fixed tonight.โ€

Estrada left by the front door, and Violet trotted happily
behind Ryan out the back.

Jayne and I watched the forensics people go about their
business. I have to admit, I find it a fascinating
procedure. Absolute proof to oneโ€™s identity and presence can
be so small it canโ€™t be seen by the unaided eye.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t mind, maโ€™am, can you step back, please. Give
us some room to work.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve missed that spot there.โ€

โ€œThank you so much for pointing that out.โ€
