Excerpt of Losing Control by Nina Croft

โ€œSheโ€™s drunk,โ€ Dave said from beside him.

โ€œYeah.โ€

They watched for a second in silence. Jake took a sip of his
beer.

โ€œIโ€™ve never seen her drunk,โ€ Dave murmured. โ€œItโ€™s kind of
scary.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAnd sheโ€™s going to break a leg in those heels if sheโ€™s not
careful.โ€

She did appear a little precariously balanced. But maybe a
leg in plaster would keep her out of trouble for a while.
And heโ€™d have the perfect excuse to take care of her.
She stretched up and whispered something in Steveโ€™s ear. He
shook his head, and Kim frowned. Every single one of Jakeโ€™s
muscles locked up tight. Beside him, Dave chuckled, and he
turned to glare.

โ€œHey, donโ€™t take it out on me.โ€ Dave threw up a hand. โ€œItโ€™s
not my fault your love life is a total load of crap.โ€
That was true, he supposed. Jake forced his muscles to relax.

โ€œBut all the same,โ€ Dave continued, โ€œIโ€™ve got to say that
itโ€™s been amusing as hell to watch.โ€ He grinned. โ€œHow the
mighty have fallen.โ€

โ€œFuck off.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you tell her how you feel?โ€

โ€œBecause sheโ€™d run a mile in the opposite direction.โ€

โ€œYup, youโ€™re screwed."

Jake cast a glance in Kimโ€™s direction. She was definitely
drunk. He sighed. โ€œNo, not tonight, Iโ€™m not.โ€

Dave laughed.

Yeah, Jake was a real funny guy. Heโ€™d had enough. The party
was over and not only for him. He placed his bottle
carefully on the table and rose to his feet. โ€œIโ€™d better
take her home.โ€

โ€œGood luck.โ€

Kim glanced in their direction, and a smile flashed across
her face. Mascara smudged under her eyes, her crimson
lipstick was long gone, yet she was still utterly gorgeous.
A pain tightened around his heart; the problem was that he
wasnโ€™t used to not getting what he wanted. He didnโ€™t know
how to deal.

She waggled her fingers in his direction and started to wend
her unsteady way across the small, almost-empty dance floor.

She met him halfway and stared up at him through panda eyes.
โ€œJakey, will you dance with me?โ€

Jakey? No one had ever called him โ€œJakeyโ€ in his life before.

โ€œPleeeease. Iโ€™ve asked everyone else, and theyโ€™re all too
scared of you. Even Mitch and heโ€™s the one leaving.โ€ She
frowned. โ€œHe said youโ€™d likely hunt him down.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s right.โ€

She ignored his comment. โ€œI told them youโ€™re nice, but no
one believes me. I think youโ€™re nice, Jakey.โ€ She blinked at
him. โ€œSo will you dance with me? Pretty please.โ€ She slid
her hands over his shoulders and stared into his face. โ€œWhy
did you have to spoil it all?โ€

He wasnโ€™t sure what she was talking about, so best keep his
answers vague. โ€œDid I?โ€

โ€œYou did. You scratched my itch. It was wonderful,
mind-blowing. You are definitely well endowed, and you knew
exactly what to do with it.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ Christ, she was going to regret this
conversation in the morningโ€”when he reminded her of it. The
thought gave him a glimmer of satisfaction.

โ€œI thought it could work, that we could be fuck buddies, and
it would be lovely. But you had to go and ruin everything.โ€

โ€œI did?โ€

โ€œYou said the M-word, and now itโ€™s all broken.โ€ She heaved a
huge sigh. โ€œYouโ€™re supposed to be dancing.โ€ She tightened
her grip on his shoulders and tugged him closer.

How could he resist such an offer? โ€œFive minutes and weโ€™re
out of here.โ€

Five minutes of purgatory.

He tried to hold his body away from hers, but after the
first thirty seconds, he figured what the hell? He slipped
his hands around her waist and pulled her against him. Kim
rested her head on his chest and swayed slowly to the music,
which was impressive considering it was a fast rock track.
Closing his eyes, he reveled in the feel of her long,
slender body pressed against his. It was torture. Blood
throbbed in his dick, and his balls ached.

Finally, he could take no more. He pulled away. She tried to
hold on for a second but then gave in.

โ€œCome on, Iโ€™ll take you home.โ€

โ€œAre you going to look after me? Keep me safe.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t I always?โ€

Her lips curved up in a sweet smile, and she nodded
solemnly. โ€œYou wonโ€™t take advantage of my inebriated state.โ€

It wasnโ€™t a question. โ€œYou know I wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI told you, you were nice.โ€

โ€œYeah, so you did.โ€

He was so not getting screwed tonight.
