Banned from the airways, Rachel's options for getting
across the country are slim, until she grudgingly agrees to
travel with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, who has his own
secret agenda on the West Coast.
Coming along with the duo are Rachel's associates, the
living vampire Ivy and Jenks, a pixy...and legions of
assassins out to ensure they never reach their destination.
The fun really starts when someone frees a fearsome, day-
walking demon from his eternal prison under the Arch in St.
Louis. It's been a rough couple of millennia and this soul-
devourer is hungry for vengeance...and Rachel is his
ultimate prize.
While this powerful witch with nerves of
steel will do absolutely anything to stay alive, even
embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save
her.
Kim Harrison takes the term 'road trip' and turns it into an action filled roller coaster of loyalty, bonding, and perseverance as Rachel Morgan and her companions travel from Cincinnati, Ohio to San Francisco, CA so she may attend the Witches Council Convention in hopes of having her shunning reversed. Tasked with seeing millionaire elf Trent Kalamac to the West Coast safely and accompanied by her faithful partners living vampire and sprite , they battle elven assassins, feral sprites, and an insane demon, all while trying to not prove to the council witch traveling with them that Rachel is a black witch.
As always, we are treated to seeing another side of some of the characters that make them more 'real' and a leading female character who can give as good as she takes. Pale Demon will have you pushing to the end to find the outcome, then wishing it doesn't end where it does (I'm not telling), begging for more. (Loa Ledbetter 10:39pm March 1, 2011)
PALE DEMON by Kim Harrison is another amazing reading experience! This book in the series throws Trent, Ivy, Jenks, and Rachel (as well as a few other characters they pick up along the way) into a car on a road trip. Why? Rachel doesn’t know, Trent won’t tell her---and let the tension commence! Trying to get Trent to California in one piece (which Rachel promised Quen she’d do!) is going to be harder then she thought, what with the wild-Elven-magic wielding assassins, the witch coven on her tail, Jenks going missing and more! Not your usual road trip! Throw in a soul-devouring demon that seems impossible to defeat, some breath-taking fight scenes, and the roller coaster that is Rachel’s relationship with Al (or Trent for that matter!) and you'll be alternating between highs and exhaustion! And the end? It leaves you flipping pages in disbelief! It can’t end there, can it??
I love love love Kim Harrison’s Rachel Ward series and I highly recommend it to anyone who is remotely interested in urban fantasy with a strong female character or who likes magic, mayhem, witches and bounty hunters! (Lara Taylor 12:14pm March 25, 2011)
