In The Unexpected Son, it is a morning like any other
in suburban New Jersey when Vinita Patil opens the battered
envelope postmarked "Mumbai." But the letter inside turns
her comfortable world upside down. It tells Vinita an
impossible story: she has a grown son in India whose life
may depend on her. Once upon a time, a naive young college girl fell for a
wealthy boy whose primary interests were cricket and
womanizing. Vinita knew, even then, that a secret affair
with a man whose language and values were different from her
own was a mistake. He finished with her soon enough--leaving
her to birth a baby that was stillborn, or so Vinita was
told. Now, that child is a grown man in desperate need. To help
her son, to know him, Vinita must revisit her darkest hours
by returning to her battle-scarred homeland--and pray for
the faith of the family she leaves behind.

Thank you for the insight. (Mary Preston 2:11am August 2, 2010)
Today's society is more open-minded, and wants to learn more about other nationalities than the older generation did. With all the trouble going on in the world, I think it helps to give them an insight into their neighbor as well. You shouldn't be surprised at all!! (Peggy Roberson 10:46am August 2, 2010)
I feel that we all need to try to accept others and teach our children the same. (Vickie Hightower 12:48pm August 2, 2010)
Thanks for a great post, Shobhan! I'm getting ready to start querying my international suspense novel and have similar nervousness as you did when you pitched your books. But you're blazing a trail, a successful one at that. Thanks for the inspiration. (Supriya Savkoor 5:47pm August 2, 2010)
Thanks to all of you who posted a comment. I'm amazed and delighted at the amount of interest in my "outside the box" books. My readers are a very loyal bunch, too.

Indian writing is hot right now. Last year one in my writers group had words which explained some of the culture in a familial context and we couldn't wait to get more. (Alyson Widen 8:25pm August 2, 2010)
What a great interview! (Brenda Rupp 10:58pm August 2, 2010)
This sounds like fascinating that I've just recently added to my wishlist. Can't wait! (Lisa Richards 1:30am August 5, 2010)
