Her apartment is suddenly engulfed in flame and Martha Benson is sure she is facing a painful death but continuing to pray RESCUE ME. Bursting through the flame is a firefighter - a man she thought never to see again. Her old flame --Frank Ellis. He carries her through the flame as if the wall of fire doesn't dare touch him.
Frank Ellis is in shock. He never expected to see Martha after he ran away from her and the danger he found he could bring to those he loved. Frank found he has an affinity for fire, and until he could control his anger and the tendency to burst into flame when he got angry, he stayed away. Now years later, he finds her in his world, and he stills feels that she is the only for him. Will she feel the same? Has too much time passed? And could she possibly love the monster that lives within him if it isn't too late?
The twist and turns in RESCUE ME are classic N.J. Walters, the author who knows how to spin us through this contemporary with a paranormal touch. What starts with the feel of a plain contemporary of a macho firefighter rescuing the fair maiden from danger quickly changes within the first few paragraphs. Frank has a "feel" for fire and just "knows" where people are and if the fire was accidental or arson. Martha is an artist who had managed to go on with her life when Frank disappeared so many years ago. No matter how long she still had deep feelings for him and wants an explanation.
RESCUE ME is a novella, so there is a lot packed into a few pages. The story is complete with the characters well fleshed out, and the reader feels emotionally pulled into their lives quickly and wants to know all the who, whats, and whys that do come out in the end. Aside from the second chance romance, there is also a firebug that must be dealt with, and the outcome is a surprise to Martha and forces Frank to finally come completely clean. Not sure if I were Martha, I would have forgiven him for all the years of misery, but what is a romance without a happy ending.
My biggest complaint with this book is that it is short, and when I came to the end I really wanted more of this world to enjoy.
In RESCUE ME, you get a hunky firefighter, a warm-hearted woman, fire - the real flames and the physical ones, danger, and intrigue ... all wrapped up in this fast paced read.
