MOONLIGHT SCANDALS is the
third book in Jennifer L. Armentrout's de Vincent series. This is a fabulous example of a
contemporary gothic romance and I love it. The de Vincent family is
synonymous with scandal and tragedy. Rosie Herpin is just trying to live
her life as best she can on her terms when Devlin de Vincent barges
into it the same way he barges into her apartment. After a few rude
comments about, among other things, Rosie's choice of décor, she
delivers a few verbal arrows back and the tone of their early
relationship is set. I don't usually enjoy stories in which the hero and
heroine have a prickly relationship at the outset, but Jennifer L.
Armentrout does so much with this story and these complex and
intriguing characters. The sexual tension is amazing and you become
emotionally invested in the characters.
Devlin de Vincent is a man with a perpetual air of danger about him.
Although most people might think Dev is as cold as ice, he cares
deeply for his brothers and will do anything to protect them. His
warped upbringing has left him with more than a few personality flaws,
but Rosie is able to see past them. Rosie is everything Dev needs - a
kind heart and listening ear when he needs it, as well as somebody to
call him on his bs when he needs it. There is something bewitching and
compelling that keeps bringing them back together, even when they
think there are all kinds of reasons why they shouldn't be together.
Jennifer L. Armentrout captures a fiery attraction that is explosive in
good ways and bad, without making it tedious or too toxic to be
endured. As their relationship evolves, Dev evolves and his wounds
from the past slowly start to heal. Trust is something Rosie and Dev
both wrestle with before they can try to be happy together.
In addition to the romance, Dev is left to try and make right the wrongs
done by the previous generation of men in his family. People say that
the de Vincent estate is haunted, and evil is something Dev knows to
be very real and alive in the souls of flesh and blood men with wicked
secret agendas. Until he finally opens up to Rosie, his family's sins,
trying to minimize the damage done by them, and stopping the evil has
been Dev's secret and solitary burden. Jennifer L. Armentrout does a
fantastic job of blending mystery and romance while keeping the quick
pace and the reader interested while the characters piece things
together.
MOONLIGHT SCANDALS is a
psychological stunner and a decadent gothic romance. This book has
everything: sexual tension galore, twins, hauntings, evil schemes, a
masquerade, and more. As I read along, I kept hearing the score from
the classic Hitchcock film VERTIGO. Having started this series out of
order, I look forward to finding and devouring the previous two books in
this series. I eagerly await Jennifer L. Armentrout's next book.
