Amelia Winn is an ER nurse who had the perfect life; she was married to
her husband, David, and was going to adopt her stepdaughter. Then
one day everything changed... While she was walking with a woman
who had been beaten by her spouse, they both were struck by a car.
The other woman died, and Amelia took a severe blow to her head
which left her deaf.
Amelia's life started to fall apart. She began drinking, and David, who
couldn't take it anymore, kicked her out of the house. Amelia now lives
in the country with her service dog Stitch. Amelia is no longer drinking
thanks to the help of Jake, her childhood friend who is a detective.
Whenever Heather has that feeling that she needs to have a drink, she
gets in her kayak and paddles down the river. Normally it is very quiet
until one day Stitch unexpectedly gets out of the boat and goes on
land. Amelia follows her dog and finds a dead body. Amelia recognizes
her right away: she's Gwen, one of her friends from before her
accident.
While waiting for the police to arrive, Amelia is pretty shaken up.
Luckily, Jake is assigned to the case and reports Amelia's statement
and takes her home. Being deaf has made Amelia's other senses
stronger, and she soon realizes strange things are going on in her own
home. One day, there is a glass of wine on the counter. Amelia knows
that she didn't put it there. Someone tried to break into her home, but
why? While all of this is going on, Amelia gets a new job working at a
clinic entering data of patients into the computer. Amelia really likes her
job, but then things there also start to change. Amelia notices that
several labs reports are missing out of charts. Why would someone
take them out and who is trying to set her up?
Heather Gudenkauf, you had me from the first chapter of
NOT A SOUND. I was so obsessed
with this book and storyline. Gudenkauf showed how people will do
anything to make money. Even if it means taking matters into their own
hands. This was a great thriller; I didn't know who the real victim in this
book was because each character was compelling. Gudenkauf makes
you feel like you are Amelia, feeling things differently due to her
deafness. I will be looking for more books by Heather Gudenkauf.
