This sweeping story starts in England in 1854, where Lady
Adel Fitzhugh finds herself in the distressing position of
being ordered to marry. Her step-brother has a new bride
and has no further need of Adel as a hostess, and he is
tired of supporting her - at the ripe age of twenty-one.
An
offer has been made by a middle-aged Baron and she will
have to accept, having no wealth of her own.
LADY ADEL'S CAPTAIN engages our sympathy right away, as
Adel's brother Reggie has sold her mare to pay family
debts. Even as she's telling her maid Tilde which gowns
and
books to pack, Captain Liam O'Shea, a friend of Reggie's,
arrives for dinner as the weather forces him to break a
longer journey. He's escorting a child, his own as it
happens, though he wasn't married and the little girl's
mother has died. He's being sent to serve in India but
wants his girl raised in Ireland, his ancestral home. Adel
knows that she has just one chance for freedom, and she
grabs it with both hands.
I was cheering for Adel as she took steps to save herself
from a truly awful fate and my admiration of her only
increased. The hall in the west of Ireland turns out to be
far from the welcoming house she'd expected, but she
squares up to the challenge. Tilde is one of the best
characters, unafraid to speak her mind after long
employment and with a wise head on her shoulders. After
Tilde charges Adel with jealousy over her new sister-in-
law
usurping her place, Adel reluctantly admits it, and Tilde
is likewise certain of whose household she wants to work
in
- not the Baron's!
Details are lovely, bringing the scene to life, with
gooseberry jam on scones and elm trees lining the manor
house drive in England, and the inevitable superstition
attending an uninhabited Irish house. Loving horses, the
Lady Adel purchases Arabians to breed, but the local
people
ride Connemara ponies. Meanwhile in India, the seeds of
rebellion have been sown, and Captain Liam deals with the
refusal of Sepoy soldiers to use cartridges greased with
animal fat. If he ever gets back to Ireland though, will
Adel want him? They may be married but there is no love.

see what author Loretta Rogers has in store for the two
brave people. This is a fine historical romance and the
twists and turns will keep you guessing.
Disinherited by her stepbrother because she refuses to marry as he wishes, Lady Adel Fitzhugh needs a miracle. When a storm drives a coach of travelers to their door, her miracle arrives in the form of Captain Liam O'Shea. Captain O'Shea is taking his motherless young daughter to live with the nuns during his five-year deployment to India. Adel seizes the opportunity to begin a new life, offering her services as governess. Liam accepts Adel's offer on the condition she raise the child at his family estate in Ireland. Fearing that if he dies in battle his daughter will be at the mercy of profiteers, he also proposes a marriage of convenience. If he returns, Adel will be free to file for an annulment and return to England. She agrees but has no idea the task will require all her strength and determination once she reaches his ruined castle and becomes "the O'Shea" to his people. And what if she wants to stay?
