Penelope is an assassin for the Council and a grave
shifter. After being left for dead five centuries ago by
the dark lord and by Galen, her lover, she has spent the
time GRAVE SHIFTING from one small cemetery to another.
She
cannot ignore the summons of the Council with a sanctioned
execution of the very same dark lord that she dreamed of
killing. The added bonus is that she gets to take Galen
out
also.
Galen had sent Penelope to her grave as one of the hard
choices he made because it meant survival. But he had paid
for his actions by being blinded and tortured. He survived
all the while planning redemption and revenge. He now
needs
her to seek his revenge and finds that after all the years
he still has feelings for the foulmouthed assassin and
hopes he can somehow earn her forgiveness. He's going to
need it ... if they survive his plan.
GRAVE SHIFTER is a different kind of paranormal with a
grave shifter and vampire as the main characters. The
storyline was well developed with just enough intriguing
twists to keep the readers attention. There is a dark side
to this, of course, with demons and dark lords involved,
but Penelope is a smart mouthed, kick butt heroine whose
very attitude did much to lighten the mood. Of course
there
were also a number of very steamy scenes with her vampire
lover, Galen, that almost made you forget she is an
assassin on assignment. Galen comes off as a little on the
stuffy side, and I had trouble picturing them as a couple,
but very quickly I had many pictures in my head. My one
complaint would be that I didn't understand Penelope's
shifter ability. Maybe I missed it somehow but a little
more explanation on who and what she is would have been
helpful. For a first time author, I would say that
Gretchen
Riley has an interesting voice and look forward to reading
more from her.
All good graves must come to an end... Assassin Penelope always follows her gut. The order-a sanctioned execution of the dark lord...and her ex-lover. Sending Penelope to the grave wasn't the first hard choice Galen made for survival. It was the first he made for someone else's. She suspects he's hiding part of his plan for destroying the dark lord feeding off the power of grave shifters, but her gut says trust him.
