THE GREATEST LOVER EVER is book five in Christina
Brooke's Ministry of Marriage series. I believe this
story can still be enjoyed without having read the previous
book in this series. The author gives enough background
information on the main characters in the prologue to help
the reader understand who they are and their situations.
Marcus, the Earl of Beckenham and Georgiana Black were
engaged six years ago and things ended badly. THE GREATEST
LOVER EVER picks up with them now that they are a little
older and wiser. Even though they still have trouble
expressing their true feelings for each other, they've
changed enough to have a better chance at making things
work. The characters in THE GREATEST LOVER EVER are not
perfect people, but flawed characters with a complexity
that make them seem more real.
Marcus and Georgie might be their own worst enemies. Marcus
is not a bad guy. He just has a habit of saying what he
thinks he should say to Georgiana, or what he thinks makes
the most sense, rather than what he really feels. He gets
so frustrated by her lukewarm reaction to his proposals,
but he doesn't realize how they sound to her. For years,
Georgie has felt as though Marcus has no strong feelings or
any real desire for her. She doesn't realize how that
couldn't be farther from the truth. She actually drives
Marcus a little crazy with the intensity of his feelings
for her, but he never reveals it. In spite of some
misguided actions on their part, I still liked both of them
and enjoyed their romance. The moment when they finally got
things right between them was very satisfying.
The supporting characters in THE GREATEST LOVER EVER added
a lot to the overall story. Georgie's half-sister Violet is
not as silly as I thought she would be. Her thinking was,
at times, a little clearer than her older sister's. Lydgate
makes a good friend who is trying to protect his buddy from
a woman who he thinks is bad for him. I also love what
Christina Brooke does with the supposed villain of this
tale. Instead of writing a one-dimensional villain, Lord
Pearce has many nuances and is a very complex character. As
a reader, I love when an author writes a character like
this. I very much hope that he will make a re-appearance in
a story of his own.
THE GREATEST LOVER EVER is a story full of flawed and
complex characters that make for an engaging and highly
entertaining story. I look forward to reading more books in
this series.
THE SWEETEST SCANDAL Beautiful, exuberant, and stubborn Georgiana Black has more spirit than sense—which she learns when an ultimatum to the Earl of Beckenham at a London ball ends their engagement. Six years later, Georgie is less concerned with impending spinsterhood than with making sure her young sister doesn’t make the same mistakes she did. But soon Georgie stumbles into a scandalous encounter with none other than her former fiancé. Beckenham is still breathtakingly desirable—and as iron-willed as ever... THE TRUEST TEMPTATION Beckenham’s brief engagement to Georgie taught him one thing—when it comes to a wife, he wants a woman who will do her duty and cause no trouble. When the fiery Georgie falls unexpectedly into his arms, Beckenham remembers just how lushly delectable she is. Suddenly, the idea of actually marrying Georgie is irresistible. In The Greatest Lover Ever, convincing her will take more than a simple proposal, however. Georgie and Beckenham finally have a second chance at love. But in a battle of wills, can passion conquer pride?
