Fantasy Urban | New Adult

It all starts with a book....

Elly is determined to protect the ancient book from the Creeps (supernatural creatures that eat humans) and she knows only one person to run to for help. Little does she expect to also find an almost-all-night bookstore owned by a vampire willing to join in her fight- along with a whole host of other supernatural good guys. The vampire, Val McTeague, caters to the late night college crowd and offers the perfect job for a vampire who loves books. Val has her own reasons for hating the Creeps (also called Jackals), and the mysterious book- and the powers it has- only increases her disgust. Who will be the victor when the battle for the powerful book starts?

Vampires, a bookstore, and a battle over an ancient book- how could I not like NIGHT OWLS with that mixture? NIGHT OWLS is the first book in a new urban fantasy series that features a plethora of supernatural creatures as well as the mysterious Brotherhood that fights evil. I love how Lauren M. Roy takes such a mishmash of legends to craft her own unique world- and the fact that books (and a bookstore) feature so prominently only makes me love NIGHT OWLS more.

NIGHT OWLS is a dark, gritty urban fantasy and the battles are not very pretty. The Creeps are one of the nastiest supernatural baddies I've read about in a long time and I couldn't help but cheer on Elly, Val, Chaz, and the rest of the gang as they take on the Creeps. Chaz is perhaps my favorite character in NIGHT OWLS as he is devoted and loyal, even as he longs for what (and who) he cannot have. I can't wait to see more of all of the characters as the series develops further and I definitely want to know more about Father Value's Brotherhood.

NIGHT OWLS is a great start to a new series and one that urban fantasy fans should appreciate. Lauren M. Roy successfully throws quite a bit of characters and world building at the reader while whetting my appetite for more. NIGHT OWLS is easily recommended!

SUMMARY

Night Owls bookstore is the one spot on campus open late enough to help out even the most practiced slacker. The employees’ penchant for fighting the evil creatures of the night is just a perk…

Valerie McTeague’s business model is simple: provide the students of Edgewood College with a late-night study haven and stay as far away as possible from the underworld conflicts of her vampire brethren. She’s experienced that life, and the price she paid was far too high for her to ever want to return.

Elly Garrett hasn’t known any life except that of fighting the supernatural beings known as Creeps or Jackals. But she always had her mentor and foster father by her side—until he gave his life protecting a book that the Creeps desperately want to get their hands on.

When the book gets stashed at Night Owls for safekeeping, those Val holds nearest and dearest are put in mortal peril. Now Val and Elly will have to team up, along with a mismatched crew of humans, vampires, and lesbian succubi, to stop the Jackals from getting their claws on the book and unleashing unnamed horrors…
