Evan Davis has been through a lot in his young life, most notably the torture and insanity that has resulted from his half-daemon heritage. Now mostly sane and an integral part of the Bradley, Ryan, and Davis Agency, Evan works occult cases with his daemon father, Brad, and Lily, a daemon who likes to explore all the sensuality the material sphere has to offer.
Still physically recovering from his last adventure, Evan signs a contract with Matt Shields, a daemon who serves a rival Prince, to obtain a box at an auction at Sotheby's. This purchase starts a chain of events that could bring about the extinction of the planet (again). The box is part of a dark and twisted legacy that takes Evan back to his nightmarish youth as he tries to discover the truth behind Matt's half-lies. Brad and Lily, determined that no one will kill Evan other than themselves, try to untangle the murderous history of the box's previous owners, while hosts of daemons gather for a war between Princes of the second sphere that, if not stopped, will have repercussions across multiple universes.
A LEGACY OF DEAMONS is the third book in a series, the first two of which have been re-released under the single title Daemon Eyes. Since this was my first venture into this urban fantasy, the beginning of the book was a bit overwhelming as I tried to form a mental picture of the world Camille Bacon-Smith has built. There is a lot to it - involving not only the earth, but also the celestial spheres and multiple daemons and their Princes. Background universe aside, it's the characters that make a book memorable and even a few days later, I still have a clear memory of Evan, Brad, and Lily. At the end of the book, I still felt a little muddy on what had really happened, but the story held my attention and I am interested in picking up Daemon Eyes to read how these daemons and half-human started this unlikely, tenuous relationship.
