Dr. Emily Drake is known as the Monster Doctor in her Atlanta community because of her ability to see the Other who live among us. Vampires, shifters, demons, charmers, Emily can see them allβregardless of whether they want her to. When bodies start turning up with their throats ripped out and animal hairs present, a police officer named Colin Gyth asks Emily to serve as their profiler. Always eager to help out, Emily agrees, but not without some hesitation. She can tell that Colin is Other, and knows that she's a shifter, but she isn't sure what kind and shifters are notoriously dangerous and volatile. Determined to keep her distance, Emily works with Colin on the investigation, but vows to keep her heart guarded in the interim period. A task that is easier said than done.
HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT is a great new paranormal romance that's both amusing and suspenseful. It's part romantic suspense and part urban fantasy. Emily Drake is an interesting heroine. She's an empath and has a connection to the Other who live around her, but she uses her powers to help them to fit in and find acceptance rather than outing them to paranoid humans who would do them harm. And she's been burned by her gift in the past, which makes her so hesitant to hook up with Colin. And Colin is my favorite kind of hero, all alpha male and possessive nature, he is willing to do anything to protect what is hisβnamely Emily. This book was a nice change from paranormals that either have so many different things going on that you're not sure where the fantasy ends, and romantic suspense that's so gory and gruesome that you want to put it down. HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT toes that line brilliantly, while providing an entertaining and passionate romance to boot. I look forward to reading more of Cynthia Eden's books after enjoying this one so thoroughly.
Dr. Emily Drakeβs patients tend to be a little unusual.
Instead of the typical therapistβs caseload of midlife
crises and mother fixations, Emily treats vampires with
blood phobias and sex-demons looking for meaningful
relationships. But her gift for recognizing and healing the
Otherβthose creatures of the night that most humans donβt
even know existβrequires a few house rules. First: Never
trust a shifter. Especially not one like Detective Colin
Gyth, whose gold-flecked eyes and predatory air make Emily
realize how much sheβs been longing to lose controlβ¦
Colin canβt believe the doctor heβs been assigned to work
with on the Night Butcher murder investigation is the one
person who could expose his true identity as a wolf
shifter. Smart, sexy, and stubborn as hell, Emily brings
out the alpha male in Colin, unleashing a wild, heady
desire that takes them both over the edge.
But in the shadows, the Night Butcher waitsβ¦eager to spill
Emilyβs blood and taste her terror. And heβll use any means
to destroy her, including the one person she has grown to
trustβ¦
