Homicide detective Carina Kincaid has a dead body on her hands and very few clues to work with. The victim, a young woman, was brutally tortured, and while investigating her murder, the detectives discover an online blog that leads them to a potential suspect called "S."
Steve Thomas is 20 years older than the victim, and when police start linking him to the death of his former girlfriend, he contacts his brother, Montana sheriff Nick Thomas. Nick has experience with serial killers, having recently ended the years-long killing spree of the Bozeman Butcher. He travels to San Diego to offer his assistance and get his brother off the suspect list.
The killer is escalating and more college students disappear. Each turns up the day after being taken, mouths glued shut, raped, tortured and wrapped in plastic. Carina and Nick race against time to discover clues in the victims' blogs documenting their sexual escapades, hoping to catch the calculating and deranged killer before he strikes again.
SPEAK NO EVIL is a tautly written thriller that grabs the reader from page one and holds on with a fisted grip until the final page. Carina and Nick are a dynamic pair, each touched by a horrific crime in their past, each needing the other to make themselves whole. The terrifying glimpses into the killer's mind are truly disturbing and the ending a surprise. This latest from Ms. Brennan will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned.
