In STOLEN IN DEATH, Nathan Barrister had supposedly interrupted a burglary in progress and was killed by the burglar, but things don’t add up for Lt. Eve Dallas. A vault filled with priceless treasures – stolen, priceless treasures – was wide open, and one item is missing. Just one item was stolen on the same night that Mr. Barrister was killed.
The family had found the vault after they began to remodel the house which they had inherited from their father, Henry. Henry had kept the vault a secret from everyone. Well, not everyone, because someone knew and helped themselves to one of the precious pieces.
Dallas finds herself not only solving a murder but also wondering if she is going to have to protect her husband as his past creeps into that murder. It also brings her face- to-face with someone from that past that she never wanted to see again.
STOLEN IN DEATH is filled with everything that fans of author J.D. Robb’s In Death series expect. Readers will get to enjoy the romance of the amazing main couple Eve and Roarke, the calculations and procedures as Eve, Peabody and staff move along solving the crime and, of course, the camaraderie of the bullpen. Part of the fun of this series and STOLEN IN DEATH is no exception, is getting a good look at the ties and socks that often make Dallas’ eyes twitch, and the language of the team that is added to elicit comedy and solidarity of her people.
There are added touches in STOLEN IN DEATH where fans get a better look at the younger days of Roarke. There were always hints of his escapades, but now we get to see a bit of reality and results.
As usual, the twists and turns of STOLEN IN DEATH flow smoothly, intermixed with the romance, the police procedures that include conversations, questions and answers, and the laughter that finds a way onto the pages.
As a fan, I am not sure how Ms. Robb has been able to keep this series going and keep it fresh and fun, but Number 62 STOLEN IN DEATH is still as exciting and enthralling as the first one. An absolutely thrilling read.
Eve Dallas stumbles into a mind-boggling case after a controversial billionaire is found murdered while surrounded by priceless art. But as Eve pieces together the scene, a dark secret comes to light in J.D. Robb's latest thriller.
