Once again, be prepared to be astonished by the originality and talent of definitely one of my favorite authors, Kelly Rimmer. THE STORY KEEPER, you see, winds up being a story within a story. Kind of like two books between one cover. So be ready to enjoy two for the price of one.
My experience with this prolific and gifted storyteller is extensive. I search out her writing; it’s that well done and memorable. THE STORY KEEPER starts out as an adventure of the literary sort, but true to this author, it slowly morphs into something compelling and real. The adventure is intrinsic in the construction of the book, which I’ve already mentioned. As always, I will be careful not to expose much of the plot. You will understand when you experience that ah-ha moment. But the ride was immensely enjoyable.
Second to that is the reality behind a story of a woman who is faced with many challenges that have unfortunately diminished her belief in her own self-worth. Questioning her value and, at some point, her mental state. There are two parallel stories here. The storyline of a family with seemingly irreparable conflicts and the basis of a published book that centers on another fictional family in peril.
As we travel back and forth between these two books, there are many uncovered clues that bring to the forefront just what Kelly Rimmer concocted. I can even count how many times I said to myself, Oh, you’ve got to be kidding. And then laughed aloud when I got it.
The culmination is, in many ways, very eye-opening as if you’ve just spent hundreds of pages reading a great mystery. Clues that are uncovered along the way just start to make sense. Questions are answered. Intentions clarified. Characters and their unique relationships are now exposed.
So if you are looking for a thoughtful and mesmerizing tale, THE STORY KEEPER should be on your list. Fans of Kelly Rimmer will genuinely enjoy this one. Certainly, lighter fare than some of my favorite of hers, but not without a one-two punch of its own.
