Having been bonded at the age of ten to pay off a debt that she is told is her father’s, Fox doesn’t remember her life before she was forced into indentured servitude. Though she may be a thief, Fox only takes from those who can well afford to lose a few coins. When the new prince’s caravan arrives while Fox is out pickpocketing with her friend Wren, Fox unexpectedly finds herself teaming up with a very handsome royal bodyguard to fend off an assassin who is attacking the prince.
With her rare ability to see the magic used to attack the prince, Fox finds herself thrust into the world of royalty, politics and a surprising romance that feels impossible. Feeling like she has traded one cage for another, Fox has only ever wanted to be free, but with the chains of love now wrapping themselves around her, she has to decide if love is its own kind of freedom.
I have not dived into the romantasy genre as much as I’ve been wanting to. My TBR pile is high, but sadly, real life keeps getting in the way. As someone who is just getting her feet wet, I was really sucked into EMBER ETERNAL. I’ve somehow managed to never read any of Chloe Neill’s other books, but I am all in for her romantasy debut. The action kicks off from chapter one, where we meet our thieving heroine, Fox and her friend Wren, and takes you on an incredible adventure. Neill has done a great job of creating her vibrant world and immersing us in it. The story does get bogged down a little in the middle, but it picks back up with the action if you stick with it. When it comes to romance, Neill keeps you wanting with the slow burn between Fox and Nik and the constant banter between Wren and Galen, one of the prince’s guards. As we get to the end of the book, there will be revelations that will have you clinging to the pages. EMBER ETERNAL bursts with action, danger, mystery, romance, and magic. Whether you’re a romantasy novice such as myself or a reader who has been immersed in the genre, I think you’ll find yourself hooked to this new series.
