Remi Hayes has a simple plan in mind. She will flip the falling-down Blackleaf Manor she inherited from her uncle and get out of GRIMSTONE. Best laid plans never work for her, and she believes she has a curse following her around. Things do not go well as she has to deal with a spooky town, her cheating ex-fiancé and her pain-in-the-ass brother Jude. On top of that is the hot next-door neighbor, Dane Covett, who happens to be a doctor and eligible – except for the whole town thinking he killed his wife. What could go wrong? For Remi, it is simply too many things, one right after another.
GRIMSTONE is a spooky thriller by author Sophie Lark. In this offering, Ms. Lark allows the readers to play detective as we read along, trying to separate the real from the fake. One of the questions is whether the manor is really haunted or if someone has ulterior motives for wanting to scare the heroine away. Remi’s character is one that is hardworking and resourceful, though she does bemoan her lack of higher education due to having had to raise her brother after their parents died. She is also haunted by dreams of their accident. Dane comes off as very cold, aloof, and more than a little disturbed. The problem I had with him was that, though you got the surface personality, Ms. Lark did not really delve into his personality, other than his obsession with Remi. There are a number of plot twists that will catch readers by surprise, and the romance between Remi and Dane is hot and steamy. To be honest, it seemed that all of Dane’s POV centered around his thoughts of getting her into bed, so we didn't really get to know him as well as we could have.
If you enjoy a book that will twist you one way, then turn you another while enjoying a steamy romance with a setting that is spooky, then GRIMSTONE will fit the bill nicely.
From USA Today bestselling author Sophie Lark comes a brand new romantic thriller series in the Gothic, secretive beach town of Grimstone.
Remi Hayes is beginning to think she's cursed—her fiancé cheated on her, her brother Jude is a major pain in her ass, and the moldering mansion she inherited from her uncle might just be haunted.
Flipping Blackleaf Manor already feels impossible, even before Remi is blackmailed by Dane Covett, the dangerously hot doctor-next-door, and Grimstone's most eligible bachelor—if you can ignore the fact that everyone in town thinks he murdered his wife.
Remi doesn't want to believe it, especially after Dane sews up a gash in her thigh and steals a kiss in payment—a kiss that makes it hard to walk for reasons that have nothing to do with an injured leg.
But as the renovation takes a strange and violent turn, Remi must decide if Dane is the one haunting her nights, or if he's trying to protect her from something much worse…
