FINLAY DONOVAN DIGS HER OWN GRAVE by Elle Cosimano is the fifth book in the Finlay Donovan series and takes readers on a wild, madcap ride. When a body is discovered in Finlay’s neighbor’s backyard, her ex-husband quickly becomes a prime suspect.
Mrs. Haggerty, a nosy busybody with a deep disdain for Finlay’s philandering ex-husband, is arrested when a body is found in her backyard, and her house becomes a crime scene. Once cleared as a suspect, with nowhere else to go, she lands on Finlay’s doorstep. Finlay reluctantly lets her stay, much to the annoyance of her nanny/partner Vero Ruiz. But Mrs. Haggerty has secrets and when Finlay’s landscaper ex-husband becomes a suspect in the crime, Finlay just doesn’t know what to believe. So, Finlay and Vero embark on an investigation to clear her ex-husband and find out what is going on with Mrs. Haggerty’s mysterious book club, and her absent grandson. Can Vero and Finlay stay alive as they kidnap podcasters, break into homes, and stay one step ahead of their own criminal past?
FINLAY DONOVAN DIGS HER OWN GRAVE will keep fans of this series rolling with laughter at the hijinks and missteps of Finlay’s unconventional sleuthing style. As a new reader to the series, it took me a moment to warm up to the characters, especially Vero, who doesn’t seem like a particularly effective nanny, but she makes a tough crime-solving sidekick. The action is non-stop, verging on the unrealistic, but that’s the appeal of this twisting and turning mystery. The characters, from the grumpy Mrs. Haggerty to the IT whiz Cam, are the real stars. The way they interact and learn to appreciate each other’s strengths adds depth to the story. With bodies in the backyard, questionable mulch deliveries, cryptic letters, a mysterious book club, anonymous tips, and scary moments in a truck, the plot is multi-faceted, fast-paced, and highly entertaining. FINLAY DONOVAN DIGS HER OWN GRAVE is madcap fun at its finest!
