Professor Emily Wilde has a plan to help Wendell Bambleby that involves a fairie foot… but first, they have to deal with the sudden influx of fairie assassins intent on killing Wendell. The college isn’t prepared for the chaos that ensues, and soon Emily and Wendell are off on another adventure, but this time with Emily’s niece and another professor tagging along. Can they navigate all the dangers of the faerie world, find a nexus, and help Wendell deal with the assassins?
EMILY WILDE’S MAP OF THE OTHERLANDS is the second book in the Emily Wilde series and I highly recommend reading the first book, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies. Heather Fawcett has crafted an enchantingly dangerous world where alliances between humans and fairies can sometimes lead to disaster… and readers will have a much better understanding if the books are read in order. In addition, much of the character development starts in the first book as we learn the various quirks of our characters.
I am in love with this series! Oh and just wait till near the end when we uncover a magical cure… if I hadn’t loved this series before, I would have fell in love at that point! Heather Fawcett’s vivid world-building and imaginative play on various fairy tales is fascinating! I had barely finished the first book before picking up EMILY WILDE’S MAP OF THE OTHERLANDS. And yes, I’m already diving into the third book as I can’t get enough of this world!
Emily is so much fun- her devotion to scholarship and her brilliant and quick thinking are admirable but it is her development of relationships that makes her so lovable. She and Wendell are hilarious together as he is the perfect companion for her, even when he whines (and she calls him out on it!). And Shadow… who can’t help but love Shadow and his secret side?
EMILY WILDE’S MAP OF THE OTHERLANDS is a darkly charming tale of fairies and their whims and quirks. Heather Fawcett’s eloquent use of language coupled with her use of diary entries to tell the story make for an enthralling storyline that is impossible to put down, even as the reader doesn’t want it to end. Highly recommended!
When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it’s too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.
Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore who just wrote the world’s first comprehensive encyclopaedia of faeries. She’s learned many of the secrets of the Hidden Ones on her adventures . . . and also from her fellow scholar and former rival Wendell Bambleby.
Because Bambleby is more than infuriatingly charming. He’s an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother and in search of a door back to his realm. And despite Emily’s feelings for Bambleby, she’s not ready to accept his proposal of marriage: Loving one of the Fair Folk comes with secrets and dangers.
She also has a new project to focus on: a map of the realms of faerie. While she is preparing her research, Bambleby lands her in trouble yet again, when assassins sent by his mother invade Cambridge. Now Bambleby and Emily are on another adventure, this time to the picturesque Austrian Alps, where Emily believes they may find the door to Bambleby’s realm and the key to freeing him from his family’s dark plans.
But with new relationships for the prickly Emily to navigate and dangerous Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, Emily must unravel the mysterious workings of faerie doors and of her own heart.
