Contemporary Chick Lit

Taylor, the creative director at an advertising agency, is married to Jake, a trial lawyer at a respected firm. They are both sprinting up the corporate ladder while enjoying business trips, late night parties and busy social lives. In six years of marriage, she and Jake haven't really connected except through enthusiastic sex. Taylor's pregnancy is so unexpected that she waits until a Hawaiian vacation several weeks later before surprising Jake with the news. He is shocked, and initially angry.

At work, Taylor loves working on a new campaign for upscale baby clothes, even though her harsh boss disapproves of her pregnancy, and a photo shoot quickly shows Taylor how much she has to learn about babies. She worries that she may lack maternal instincts and has held back the truth about her own parents and grandmother's deaths. Taylor knows Jake isn't excited about this change in their plans, but will this baby pull them apart before they can pull themselves together?

Inspired by Ms. Lott's own pregnancy journals, this moving, realistic novel captures one woman's journey to motherhood from a suspiciously late period through the arrival of a happy, healthy baby. I can't imagine a child appreciating the journal entries that Taylor writes for her unborn child -- her doubts and worries are too truthful. But as a reader, I enjoyed the refreshing honesty that Taylor brings to the beatific glowing pregnant stereotype. This frank and funny romp through pregnancy has similarities to Jenny McCarthy's BELLY LAUGHS or Ariel Gore's THE HIP-MAMA SURVIVAL GUIDE. THE STORK REALITY is part of an emerging trend between chick-lit career girls and mommy-lit housewives, where babies are still made the old-fashioned way, nine months at a time! Highly recommended, especially if you know someone who's expecting!

SUMMARY

With a prestigious position at an advertising agency, a bustling social calendar, and an on-the-rise lawyer husband, 28-year-old Taylor Montgomery seems to have it all. But her seemingly picture-perfect world threatens to collapse when she gets the one thing that wasn’t on her to- do list: pregnant.

Both hilarious and hearbreaking, THE STORK REALITY follows Taylor through her pregnancy as she deals with her ever- changing body, an unsympathetic boss, an evolving marriage, and the relationship she had with her own mother.
