"A Suspenseful and Satisfying Revenge Thriller"

Fresh Fiction Review

Thriller Crime

Carter Wilson’s TELL ME WHAT YOU DID is a creepy revenge thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats as the tension mounts and the dramatic climax goes live on Halloween.

Poe Webb hosts a popular podcast called Tell Me What You Did. It allows people to unburden themselves of their darkest deeds, and it allows Poe to speak with killers, something she’s craved since witnessing her mother’s murder thirteen years ago. Poe is trying to understand what drives people to kill, but when a guest appears claiming to be the murderer of Poe’s mother, Poe knows he’s lying. Poe murdered that man in New York seven years ago. Or did she kill the wrong man? Because Poe finds this guest’s face awfully familiar. Poe’s producer boyfriend Kip wants to pull the plug on this guest, but Poe soon finds herself in a game of survival with a vengeful killer.

TELL ME WHAT YOU DID thrusts readers straight into the action and takes them on a wild ride through Poe’s trauma, revenge, and fallout. Told through multiple timelines, the back-and-forth structure effectively ramps up the tension and heightens the suspense. As the night of revelations draws near, the backstory fills in, and readers become aware of what Poe is really up against. The dialogue is sharp, and the short chapter lengths keep the novel moving at a quick pace; however, the middle does get slightly bogged down with repetition and Poe’s ruminations. Yet, the ending comes on strong and keeps readers entranced as Poe makes her final move. The murders are graphic and terrifying, and the villain’s pure menace is palpable throughout. TELL ME WHAT YOU DID uses the podcast format effectively, and it also contains QR codes with extra creepy content. Although Poe wasn’t one of my favorite Carter Wilson characters, the premise of TELL ME WHAT YOU DID is gripping and entertaining, delivering a suspenseful and satisfying revenge thriller.

SUMMARY

She gets people to confess their crimes for a living. He knows she's hiding a terrible secret. It's time for the truth to come out…

Poe Webb, host of a popular true crime podcast, invites people to anonymously confess crimes they've committed to her audience. She can't guarantee the police won't come after her "guests," but her show grants simultaneous anonymity and instant fame—a potent combination that's proven difficult to resist. After an episode recording, Poe usually erases both criminal and crime from her mind.

But when a strange and oddly familiar man appears on her show, Poe is forced to take a second look. Not only because he claims to be her mother's murderer from years ago, but because Poe knows something no one else does. Her mother's murderer is dead.

Poe killed him.

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Dead Girl in 2A and The New Neighbor comes a chilling new thriller that forces the question: are murderers always the bad guys?
