In KINGMAKERS: YEAR TWO – readers begin with finding Zoe Romero has been trapped in a marriage contract set up by her family and even at Kingmaker’s Academy there is no escape. The sadistic Rocco Prince is one of the students. The only good thing about being there is Miles Griffin and the chance to continue to protect her younger sister, Cat. Miles knows the role he must play but even the chance of war won’t stop his attraction to Zoe. She might be off limits, but he is determined to claim what his heart wants.
Author Sophie Lark continues her Brutal Birthrights series with stories of the children of crime families with a setting in a college that teaches the skills needed to be part of that world. Higher learning for the elite criminal element so to speak. As a twist in mafia books, this setting is certainly different with the chance to learn about the families and the almost adult children of those we met in Ms. Lark’s Brutal Birthright series.
Miles and Zoe are typical college-age students, and the layout of this world lets you know that they are in a college setting. Miles’ parents Callum and Aida are from “Brutal Prince” and the love in that family is amazing. Zoe, unfortunately, comes from an abusive home with a stepmother who lives in austere perfection that doesn’t contain an ounce of warmth for Zoe or Cat. And to be fair getting hints of her life with her husband you might understand some of where she comes from – or perhaps not.
Life in the academy is intriguing as well as the characters that have been sent there from all over the world. They are varied in personality and well fleshed out, so you know the good guys and the problems. Cat, Zoe’s younger sister, is a student and at first, you get the feeling that she doesn’t fit in. She had been sheltered by Zoe as much as she could from the family. But as time goes on, she grows into a stronger young woman but along the way, she becomes the obsession of the school’s worst bully. Hopefully, for her sake, Ms. Lark can make this all work for the brave woman.
At the end of KINGMAKERS: YEAR TWO we get to meet up with the Griffin and Gallo families while Zoe and Cat take time to tour Chicago. But, of course, the best part is seeing Zoe and Miles have a chance at a life together and make plans. You will have to read KINGMAKERS: YEAR TWO to find out how she escapes the marriage contract – it will surprise you!
