"Riders on the storm in West Texas"

Romance Western | Christian

Texas Ranger Brianna Macguire, who prefers to be called Bree, is officially on leave after a crime-fighting incident. But she saddles up and rides out from her family ranch to where she thinks she might track down a cattle-rustling bad guy. She’s about to become a TEXAS REVENGE TARGET. And she’s not alone.

Cameron Wolfe, the new ranching neighbour, has just encountered a suspicious man who threatens him when Bree rides up and identifies her quarry, Leon Waring. With that man arrested the story really gets under way. There is hardly a page without action or tension. Bree is in danger if a Mexican crime cartel knows her whereabouts, and as it happens, Cameron also has a price on his head from a different cartel. He changed his name, moved and hid, but running into Bree’s problems may declare open season on him as well.

Much of the story is spent on horseback, exploring the vast Llano Estacado prairie. Set in West Texas, this has very much a cowboy feel as cattle, horses and severe storms fill the pages. The technology is right up to date, however, and the reader is kept guessing as to what will arrive next. Being isolated doesn’t mean you are safe or alone anymore. I love that we meet a kind, genuine Mexican lady housekeeper on a ranch, Estrella, who provides delicious Tex-Mex food and cares for the residents. The story is well-balanced from all angles, as no aspect is wholly good, bad, safe or dangerous.

The lightly inspirational theme means that the budding romance can be read without a blush, but the level of danger is such that I’d recommend TEXAS REVENGE TARGET to mature teens or adults. And they’d better love horses. Teton, Rojo, Myra and a pack mare are essential characters in the adventure, as suggested by the handsome loose horse on the cover.

Jill Elizabeth Nelson, who lives in rural Minnesota, has also set stories in the Rockies, on the Texas-Mexican border and Philadelphia, to name a few. Any book she writes with horses is going onto my must-read list.
