The Down and Dirty, a club owned by Crack has many, many memories for Lt. Eve Dallas and now there is another one – PASSIONS IN DEATH. What started as a wild and crazy pre-wedding party has ended in shock and sadness. One bride, Erin, is dead, and the other, Shauna, is in shock along with other women friends. There are no witnesses despite the club being full. The only clues were a bag left behind in the private room where the bride was found. It was filled with items that would show Shauna that her partner had managed to scrimp for a wedding trip to Hawaii. Shauna’s dream honeymoon.
The place – the Down and Dirty brings back some tough memories to Eve as this was also her pre-wedding party. With memories of her friends – though she wasn’t sure at the time what good friends they were – and the thoughts of the bad guy who almost ended her life come back when she begins looking for clues. No witnesses, and no clues, but Lt. Eve Dallas will find the answer to who killed the bride if it’s the last thing she and her partner Peabody and, of course, her husband, Roarke do.
PASSIONS IN DEATH brings J.D. Robb fans back to the fantastic, fantasy world of New York cop Lt. Eve Dallas, her husband, her partner and her squad. As always there is so much to enjoy about this series and despite the number, it is still fresh, heartbreaking and yet fun.
Fans of the In Death series will enjoy the usual camaraderie and enjoy Eve’s interesting look at life. At one point we get to see a discussion on “murder faces” in the elevator and at another time she talks to Roarke about how dangerous vacations can be (i.e. beaches have sharks, camping has bears, kangaroos in Australia) – which has Roarke shaking his head and loving his wife even more.
The bride and bride have a “tribe” of friends and one of those is the killer. Watching Eve, Roarke and Peabody ferret out the truth is always an amazing thing. No one does a murder mystery as well as J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts). She knows how to give readers the hard facts, the sometimes unpleasant look at life while mixing in a fantastic romance, and a lighter dialogue among friends and co-workers. It all rolls into an amazing read.
Homicide Detective Eve Dallas hunts a killer who turns a wedding party into a murder scene in the latest novel by the #1 bestselling author, J.D. Robb.
On a hot August night, Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, speed through the streets of Manhattan to the Down and Dirty club, where a joyful, boisterous pre-wedding girls’ night out has turned into a murder scene. One of the brides lies in a pool of blood, garroted in a private room where she was preparing a surprise for her fiancée—two scrimped and saved-for tickets to Hawaii.
Despite the dozens of people present, useful witnesses are hard to come by. It all brings back some bad memories for Eve. In her uniform days, she’d suffered an assault in the very same room—but she’d been able to fight back and survive. She’d gotten justice. And now she needs to provide some for poor young Erin.
Eve knows that the level of violence and the apparent premeditation involved suggest a volatile mix of hidden, heated passion and ice-cold calculation. This is a crime that can be countered only by hard detective work and relentless dedication—and Eve will not stop until she finds the killer who destroyed this couple’s dreams before the honeymoon even began…
