Young Adult Science Fiction
Celaena Sardothien is languishing in the Salt Mines of Endovier. Forced into slavery, she’s gone from being Adarlan’s most feared assassin to walking everywhere in shackles. However, the Crown Prince of Adarlan, Dorian Haviliard, is now offering Celaena an intriguing proposal- win his father’s competition and become the King’s Champion and freedom will be hers within 5 years. Can Celaena navigate through the various challenges while avoiding the evil lurking in the king’s infamous castle of glass?
THRONE OF GLASS is the first book in the Throne of Glass series and the first book published by Sarah J. Maas. Fans of the series are torn on whether THRONE OF GLASS or its prequel, ASSASSIN’S BLADE, should be read first. Personally, I read ASSASSIN’S BLADE first as it delves into Celaena’s life before the notorious Salt Mines of Endovier and I feel it gives depth to her character and her motivations in THRONE OF GLASS. However, you’ll find many fans who will hotly debate otherwise.
Sarah J. Maas does a spectacular job with world-building. Dare I say she’s THE master at world-building? THRONE OF GLASS introduces us to a dark world where the king has overthrown or killed all who defy him. Magic no longer exists, and any hint of magic can end in death if discovered. Celaena was spoiled to a life of luxury, despite her role as an assassin, and she has a lot of training to strengthen her body after the horrors of Endovier. Captain Chaol Westfall has been charged with helping Celaena in this endeavor. Prepare to fall in love with the characters and the world, even as the evil lurking in Rifthold has the reader questioning just who can be trusted.
If you haven’t read a book by Sarah J. Maas, stop what you are doing and pick up one of her series now. Even readers who aren’t typical fantasy readers fall in love with her richly developed characters and vast world-building. THRONE OF GLASS is a spectacular start to a series that only gets better and better with each new installment!
SUMMARY
After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
