WHAT'S LEFT OF ME is a quick read with a captivating story and a lot of emotion. It’s not a new story, or anything different, but it’s very well told, and the characters, especially, Kate are very realistic and compelling. Karen Foley knows how to write about family drama, heartbreak, and forgiveness. I can not wait to read more by this wonderful and heart-tugging author.
I was surprised at how fast I read WHAT'S LEFT OF ME! Many times when I read novels, it takes a while to get into them as authors usually spend some time to set the scene, but not in this case, the action started right away and I was rooting for Kate all the way. I just could not put this book down until I found out all the secrets. Kate is so awesome. What makes her stand out is the fact that she has flaws, but she is somewhat comfortable with them. Her sassy attitude makes for very interesting scenes between her and Holden.
Although it is a little bit predictable, the plot in WHAT'S LEFT OF ME is very intriguing. I enjoyed this beautiful story. Kate is a bit of a mess but has a huge heart. Holden has loved Kate since they were kids in school, but he never acted on his feelings. Later in life when Kate comes back home with her infant son, Holden is there for her. He helps out in any way he can. It’s very clear that Kate and Holden have some great chemistry, but once they spend more time together a real friendship happens, and from that comes deeper feelings. That is until Holden's secret is revealed to Kate. Can Kate forgive him?
When an accident happens that involves Holden as well as Kate's son, Ryan, I thought my heart was going to shatter. Poor Kate! Karen Foley gave me all the feels at just the right time and left me with a huge smile on my face and a lump in my throat. My only complaint was that WHAT'S LEFT OF ME ended. I could have gone on reading for many more hours!
Quiet and steadfast, lobsterman Holden Foster has loved Kate Belshaw since he was an awkward teenager without a hope of winning her heart. When she married his best friend right out of high school, he believed she was lost to him forever. That didn't stop him from watching over her and her young son each time her military husband deployed to the far side of the world. Fifteen years later, she's a single mom-and he's no longer a self-conscious teen. He's always been there for Kate, even if she didn't realize it. But can he convince her to take a chance on a man who will love her the way she deserves?
A surprise pregnancy at eighteen derailed Kate's college dreams, and her youthful marriage to Bittersweet Harbor's golden boy was far from blissful. Now a single mom, she waits tables at her family's iconic diner and bakes in her spare time, determined to save enough money to open her own pastry shop. She has no time for distractions-especially not the strong, silent kind that make her heart beat faster and her knees go weak. But when a dark secret from Holden's past resurfaces, it could destroy everything Kate thought she knew about him-and herself.
