"Petra Grady may not really be the janitor, but only she can clean up the mages' deadly magical mess."

Fantasy | Paranormal Romance

Working magic produces a magical waste called dross. That’s where Petra Grady comes in. While she has no talent for magic, she knows how to handle dross. Though looked down upon by the careless mages who can work magic as their personal janitor who cleans up after them, Petra keeps the mundane world unaware of magic and uses her ability to become the best sweeper at St. Unoc, the mages’ university she works at in Arizona.

Being the best may just be Petra’s downfall. When she’s asked to work with Doctor Benedict Strom and his team on his project to render dross harmless, she’s told she doesn’t have much choice in the matter. Aside from having a painful past with Benny, Petra doesn’t believe what he wants to do is possible. It doesn’t take long for Petra’s belief to become reality. A terrible accident forces Petra and Benny to go on the run and it soon becomes apparent that Petra’s abilities far exceed just being a cleaner and she may be the only person capable of saving their city.

Move over The Hollows Rachel Morgan, Kim Harrison has a new series, and its kickass heroine is ready to take on the world. THREE KINDS OF LUCKY starts off The Shadow Age series with a magical bang that’ll have you reading all night long. Harrison’s newest urban fantasy has all the elements you’d expect; a delightfully feisty heroine, a fascinating new world, an intriguing magic system, and all the action you could want. There is a lot of world-building, as the stage is set up for the series, but Harrison does a great job of weaving her magic and pulling you in. THREE KINDS OF LUCKY is a thrilling start to a new series that gives readers a new heroine to root for and will leave them eagerly anticipating Petra’s next adventure. (Trigger alert: this book does include the death of a pet.)

SUMMARY

Luck is its own kind of magic, in this first book in an electrifying new contemporary fantasy series from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Hollows novels.

Petra Grady has known since adolescence that she has no talent for magic—and that’s never going to change. But as a sweeper first-class, she’s parlayed her rare ability to handle dross—the damaging, magical waste generated by her more talented kin’s spellwork—into a decent life working at the mages’ university.

Except Grady’s relatively predictable life is about to be upended. When the oblivious, sexy, and oh-so-out-of-reach Benedict Strom needs someone with her abilities for a research project studying dross and how to render it harmless, she’s stuck working on his team—whether she wants to or not.

Only Benedict doesn’t understand the characteristics of dross like Grady does. After an unthinkable accident, she and Benedict are forced to go on the run to seek out the one person who might be able to help: an outcast exiled ten years ago for the crime of using dross to cast spells. Now Grady must decide whether to stick with the magical status quo or embrace her own hidden talents . . . and risk shattering their entire world.
