A GENTLEMAN IN PURSUIT OF TRUTH is the delightful book four in The Lord Julian Mysteries by historical author Grace Burrowes. I know Burrowes best for her gentle Regency romances, but in 2023, she started this new, engaging historical mystery series that has a touch of romance. To my happy surprise, I like her mysteries even more than I like her romances!
Lord Julian Caldicott was a Napoleonic war military spy who was captured by the French, while his brother, also a spy, was killed by the same enemy. Poor Lord Julian is unjustly suspected of divulging state secrets under torture, and it’s heartbreaking to watch him fight the court of public opinion yet uplifting to see him come to terms with the truths about himself and what truly matters that his background has engendered. Lord Julian is a typical Burrowes hero- stalwart, honorable, and gentle.
Julian is called in to help the man currently occupying the estate of his brother, the duke’s lover. This absolute ass of a man lost his prized hunting dog and is throwing a huge hissy fit about it. Julian has turned his hand to amateur investigations in his post-war life. This mystery finds him pulled in different directions by conflicting duties. The tugging of Julain in different directions just adds to the complexity of the mystery which slowly increases in intricacy as family secrets, fraud, blackmail, and slander are revealed.
Lord Julian is a heroic figure struggling against both evil men and a difficult past, and he’s so easy to adore. It’s so satisfying to see him unveil the evildoer and see justice done. Burrowes’ A GENTLEMAN IN PURSUIT OF TRUTH brings us another appealing Regency mystery with plenty of twists and turns to captivate the reader.
A dogged investigation... Lord Julian Caldicott is summoned to the country home of a family friend to search for a prize foxhound who’s gone missing. The purloined canine turns out to be only the tail of a series of puzzles involving family secrets, slander, blackmail, and fraud. Matters grow more baffling when Julian is told to drop the investigation, though suspects abound, motives are multiplying, and a large sum of money has come into play.
Hounded by lies... Julian survives an attempt on his life, and endures slights to his honor rather than give up on his objective.
