There is nothing a DEATH TAKER can’t handle – too bad that isn’t exactly her job description. Lark Morgan is a necromancer, someone who raises the dead to help settle family disputes and work with the cops to solve crimes. Though glammys, a name given to those who possess magic, are still distrusted, there are times when even the cops need their help... just not in an officially titled way.
A quick look at her life of late: Lark has the inside knowledge on the oftentimes cranky Detective Connor Kang (featured in DEATH RAISER); the Vampire Master of the City is still requiring that she help with raising his children (and hasn’t tried to kill her yet); the Lord of the Veil wants her to get him out of the veil (so not happening); and the body of a spirit she talked to not long ago has shown up very dead with no spirit--as in completely destroyed. Who or what can destroy a spirit? Such is the life of Lark Morgan!
DEATH TAKER is the third book of J.C. McKenzie’s Lark Morgan series and too bad it ends as a trilogy. There is so much more fans would love to see with these characters and this intricate world. Lark and Kang are exactly the perfect match for one another, and his partner Jacob is right up there with a surprise or two of his own, as a great friend. Add in her brother Logan, his boyfriend Brandon, and her mom, and you get answers to family secrets that the kids didn’t know. That is when she understands her mother’s five rules. Fans will find these written out and crossed out as Lark breaks them.
The romance took a bit of getting to in this series, but Ms. McKenzie certainly steams up the pages to make up for the slow build.
Pierre, the vampire that Lark helped raise in DEATH MAKER, plays a pivotal role in the Master's confrontation with Lark, when Gregor decided to kill her off by making the mistake of grabbing Brandon as a hostage. But you have to read DEATH TAKER to find out how that goes and why!
There are quite a few twists throughout DEATH TAKER and the bad guy, who is destroying the souls, is a pretty big unexpected turn. In the end justice by way of Logan is served and the DEATH TAKER ends with Connor Kang’s famous greeting to Lark. It will add a laugh, though it is sad to see the end of this enjoyable paranormal trilogy.
Life as a necromancer is never easy, but when the body of a ghost from my past turns up, inexplicably whole, very dead, and without a soul, I seriously reconsider my chosen profession. What good am I as a necromancer if I can’t raise the dead?
I might be a failure, but I’m still in high demand. The vampires want me to raise their progeny. The Lord of the Veil wants me to help him escape the veil. The police want me to continue solving their murder cases without giving me a pension.
And Detective Connor Kang wants me, too. Just me. He makes the magic in my blood sing and now I know his true identity and what’s in his heart. But as it turns out, Kang isn’t the only person in my life harbouring a secret.
I need to rescue a supernatural hostage, figure out who or what is capable of destroying souls, and somehow stay alive and out of the clutches of those who would seek to kill or use me. Mom raised me to follow five sacred rules to necromancy, and I’ve faithfully followed every single one.
Until now.
