Grace Burrowes brings us the delightful seventh in her Mischief in Mayfair series, MISS DETERMINED. Burrowes is a proven commodity in my book, with gentle romances between individuals of a more mature age and plenty of found family. I can count on Burrowes to leave me sighing in happiness as each couple reaches their Happily Ever After.
I really like both hero and heroine in MISS DETERMINED! Trevor is the Marquess of Tavistock. He's been working around on the Continent, learning about creating wine and beer. He doesn't want to come home to England, where his utterly craptastic father still casts a long shadow even after his well-deserved death. Trevor's father left the English estate on shaky financial footing, and Trevor's solicitor is now trying to convince Trevor to contract a mercenary marriage to shore up the family coffers.
Trevor discovers a number of discrepancies in his solicitor's records, and so Trevor takes off on his own to Berkshire to do his own investigating. It seems his solicitor has been cooking the books, and Trevor wants to check out the estates the Marquisate owns with his own eyes. Twidboro Hall is one such estate, currently rented (at increasingly exorbitant and deceitful rates) by Miss Amaryllis DeWitt and her family. Trevor is such a gentleman of distinction! He is hardworking and honorable, and doesn't realize how much he is pining for both familial and comradely companionship as well as romantic love.
Amaryllis DeWitt is likewise a very appealing character. She's forthright and generous, and she works so hard to take great care of those around her. Amaryllis's brother Gavin ran away a few years ago and left the family in the lurch. They don't know if Gavin is even alive! The DeWitt's nasty solicitor, the selfsame crook who is hoodwinking the Marquess of Tavistock, is also taking advantage of the DeWitt ladies who have been left without a male protector. Oooo, how the evil solicitor makes my blood boil in this book!
I love the large family that Trevor is related to by marriage, and how they rally to assist Trevor in his time of need. There are also several pleasingly unexpected twists and turns in this romance as Trevor and Amaryllis discover their feelings for each other and then must battle to become affianced and married. I had a hard time setting this sweet book down once I opened it up. Burrowes does another notable job in this tender romance that warmed my heart. Burrowes's MISS DETERMINED is full of charm, with appealing characters who deserve the Happily Ever After they fight so hard to achieve.
Trevor, Marquess of Tavistock, has finally decided to stop larking around on the Continent, come home, and take a bride. His solicitors applaud his decision to settle down, provided he chooses a wealthy young lady to be his marchioness. Those years Trevor spent seeing the world were bad years for the lordly coffers. Trevor is reluctant to consign himself to a mercenary marriage, and instead considers selling off some of his smaller properties. While inspecting one such estate, he meets Miss Amaryllis DeWitt. Her family is desperately trying to find a title for her to marry, and she does have the most lovely fortune, but she thinks Trevor is an aspiring beer merchant, and he thinks the truth might get him drop-kicked back to France. Then there's the tenant Trevor finds on another estate, whose existence the solicitors have been trying to hide...Will it be truth or true love for Trevor and Amaryllis?
