Winter Massey is a U.S. Marshall and a single father who can't get over his wife's death. Keeping his life running smoothly is a constant challenge, particularly when presented with a hired killer, corpses and a special assignment (against his wishes) to WITSEC, Witness Security. But he's known as a hot-shot and the powers that be wanted the best security on this witness, and Massey doesn't let them down. What he doesn't expect is that the witness's wife, Sean Devlin, will start to thaw his frozen heart.
Sean Devlin had no idea her husband was a hired killer. Married only a short time, she is propelled into the midst of chaos and drama, and when someone tries to kill her, she finds herself clinging to a competent and kind U.S. Marshall. The two begin the run of their lives together, facing "ghosts" (former Special Forces men who are listed as killed -- but who somehow show up with real guns trying to kill them) and trying to keep their sanity.
Miller delivers. In a sharp, believable style, he weaves varied elements together and creates a tapestry that keeps the reader turning pages, waiting impatiently for the next jarring action scene. He's particularly gifted with characterization, which is sometimes lacking in action books. Massey and Devlin, as well as supporting characters, are compelling and well-written. Dell editors made a great decision, too -- the sequel to this book is being released in July so you won't have long to wait to meet Massey in his second adventure!
