Suspense Psychological

THE WRITING RETREAT by Julia Bartz is a psychological nightmare about five aspiring authors who win a spot at a month-long writing retreat held by famous horror writer Roza Vallo.  The participants will need to write an entire novel in a month and one will win the coveted seven-figure publishing deal.  As the retreat begins, the women embark on a dark and dangerous path of competition, misplaced devotion, jealousy, and deceit.

Alex is working a low-level educational publishing job with dreams of becoming a famous author.  She adores feminist horror author Roza Vallo and can’t believe her luck when she is offered a spot at Roza’s writing retreat held at Blackbriar estate.  The only downside is her ex-best friend will also be attending.  Alex’s relationship with Wren ended badly after a nasty showdown.  Yet, Alex is determined to move forward.  As the writers converge on the estate, and the rules are explained, Alex starts her quest to win the writing contract.  It isn’t long before Roza’s mind games and erratic behavior starts to alarm the participants.  After Roza drugs them during a session, and one writer vanishes into the snowy night, Alex and the rest of the group start to wonder what they’ve gotten themselves into.

THE WRITING RETREAT will appeal to some readers, but not all. The premise is good and there are some terrifying ordeals that the women must face.  However, these characters make truly questionable and dangerous decisions, especially Roza, who comes across as predatory.  Taken at its core, THE WRITING RETREAT is a scary and brutal ride with a group of women who are competing for publishing success.  Several are exploring their sexuality and grappling with their identities.  There are weird sex dreams and duplicitous behavior and the subplot of a book within a book did not enhance the story.  Although the actual plot was interesting, I would have enjoyed a more linear storyline without so much angst and emotional sexual drama thrown in.  Although this novel wasn’t quite right for me, other readers may enjoy it.

SUMMARY

The Plot meets Please Join Us in this psychological suspense debut about a young author at an exclusive writer’s retreat that descends into a nightmare.

Alex has all but given up on her dreams of becoming a published author when she receives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: attend an exclusive, month-long writing retreat at the estate of feminist horror writer Roza Vallo. Even the knowledge that Wren, her former best friend and current rival, is attending doesn’t dampen her excitement.

But when the attendees arrive, Roza drops a bombshell—they must all complete an entire novel from scratch during the next month, and the author of the best one will receive a life-changing seven-figure publishing deal. Determined to win this seemingly impossible contest, Alex buckles down and tries to ignore the strange happenings at the estate, including Roza’s erratic behavior, Wren’s cruel mind games, and the alleged haunting of the mansion itself. But when one of the writers vanishes during a snowstorm, Alex realizes that something very sinister is afoot. With the clock running out, she must discover the truth—or suffer the same fate.

A claustrophobic and propulsive thriller exploring the dark side of female relationships and fame, The Writing Retreat is the unputdownable debut novel from a compelling new talent.
