On a dark night in 1914, elite German commandos land from a submarine run by Captain Reinhart in the jungle in French Guiana. They are raiding a heavily guarded French island prison to free a special inmate named Hessmann. But due to circumstances, they also end up saving a sly Englishman as he helps them find Hessmann on condition he is also rescued from the living hellhole.
Meanwhile, back in pre-war U.S., a shipment of rifles is being sent to the British, and the Van Doren Detective Agency is utilized to help get around the law making the shipment a violation of American neutrality. After finding a stash of rifles, Van Doren’s Chief Investigator Isaac Bell wonders why that would happen. What is so important that a spy or saboteur would make the switch? What is the connection to Hessman?
Written by New York Times bestselling author Jack Du Brul, THE SEA WOLVES is a dynamic, fast-moving, and action-packed, novel that captures the spirit of Clive Cussler. Despite being the 13th Isaac Bell Adventure in the series, THE SEA WOLVES also works very effectively as a stand-alone thriller as the reader is in awe that Isaac Bell somehow survives!
Roughly based on historical events, which could conceivably have happened, Du Brul introduces a wide variety of “new” technology--cars, ships, submarines, weapons, radio tubes, and airplanes--that are all accurate and possible. The characters, both enemy and allies are intelligent and believable, and the “Cast of Characters” certainly helps in keeping them all straight! In addition to the clever and deductive Isaac Bell, I particularly liked Joe Marchetti, a Naval Ensign, and his way of deducting statistical anomalies in battle tactics and information to make probable theories as to what is happening. Real people, such as Franklin Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, are also introduced which adds to the realism of various situations.
From German submarines to the voyage of the RMS Lusitania, Du Brul’s THE SEA WOLVES has more than enough adventure and heart-stopping moments that will keep your eyes glued to the page and then eagerly moving on to the next chapter. So, check out how this exciting Van Doran Detective Agency adventure links up with the sly English prisoner. Whether you are already a long-time fan or relish an enthralling thriller, I heartily and fully recommend Clive Cussler's THE SEA WOLVES. Just be prepared for a completely suspenseful and spellbinding journey!
Detective Isaac Bell battles foreign spies, German U-boats, and an old nemesis to capture a secret technology that could alter the outcome of World War I in the latest adventure in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Clive Cussler.
As New England swelters in the summer of 1914, Detective Isaac Bell is asked to investigate a cache of missing rifles—only to discover something much more sinister. Whoever broke into this Winchester Factory wasn’t looking to take weapons, they wanted to leave something in the shipping crates: a radio transmitter, set to summon a fleet of dreaded German U- boats. Someone is trying to keep American supplies from reaching British shores, and if Bell doesn’t crack the conspiracy in time, the Atlantic Ocean will run red with blood.
Bell must hunt down a new piece of technology that is allowing the Germans to rule the seas from New York to England. With the outcome of the war at stake and Franklin Roosevelt’s orders on the line, Bell will risk everything to stop the U-Boats before they strike again.
