Humor | Horror

This novel is labeled as a horror, but it also has a little bit of humor as well. I must admit this one seems intriguing by the title. IF THIS BOOK EXITS, YOU’RE IN THE WRONG UNIVERSE, really makes you want to read it just to see what it is about. At least, that is the main reason I picked it up. The writing is different than the other types of suspense and mysteries that I would read. Jason Pargin added some supernatural elements to this novel that leaves you thinking, “Am I reading a Sam and Dean Winchester story?” with all the craziness. Which, by the way, I seemed to love about the novel as well as the actual characters themselves.

John, Dave, Amy, and Joy are each in their own way a little corky, but they work great together and strangely enough, they understand each other even when they seem to act as though they do not. A mother contacts them about a toy her daughter has that seems to be acting weird as it demands flesh from people for the toy to work. Controlled by an app, this puts a new spin on toys requiring apps that will make the reader think twice before buying any such toy for their child. (Can a book scare you that much?) Not only is her daughter’s Magpie toy asking for some weird items to be fed, but others as well all across the world.

During the whole time, they sometimes find that things are not what they seem. Asked themselves at times if this was a dream or did they just relive that a second time. They start to wonder about their own existence.

Did I enjoy this hilarious but at times nerve-wracking novel? Yes, I did. At first, it started out a little weird and had me wondering if I made a mistake, but then I could not wait to finish it. Mainly curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to know how this would end. IF THIS BOOK EXITS, YOU’RE IN THE WRONG UNIVERSE, written by Jason Pargin is a stand-alone or if you read the others, you know what to expect. If you have not read them, then give this a shot.

SUMMARY

New York Times bestselling author Jason Pargin’s hilarious and horrifying John Dies at the End series continues with If This Book Exists, You’re in the Wrong Universe.

I want you to stop what you're doing and ask yourself an important question: If some dark, powerful entity was attempting to ensnare your mind and dominate your will, would you even notice?

A competent devil would know that if he revealed his true nature, you'd resist, or seek help. The ideal possession would be more subtle; to you, it would feel like it was your choice. The takeover of your soul would be soothing, satisfying, maybe even kind of fun. An entity armed with such techniques would ensnare millions before anyone caught on.

In possibly related news, Dave, John and Amy hear from a panicked mother that a popular toy and its connected smartphone app are demanding flesh from her daughter. Around the world, other owners of the toy are reporting the same. Who, or what, is behind it? What's their endgame? And why does this mother seem to be harboring dark secrets about her family's past?

As these three barely-employed amateurs dig for the truth under layers of high-tech occult manipulation and subterfuge, another crucial question lingers: Is there seriously no one else who can handle this?
