Book three in the post-apocalyptic urban fantasy Mercenary Librarians series by Kit Rocha is the delightful DANCE WITH THE DEVIL. I will happily devour anything that Kit Rocha (the writing duo of Bree Bridges and Donna Herren) creates, and DANCE WITH THE DEVIL amply rewards my dystopian fandom. The Mercenary Librarians series is published by a traditional publishing house, so don't look for the rampant unfettered sexuality found in Rocha's self-published Beyond series. The Mercenary Librarians series still brings us sexy supersoldiers, however, battling against the seemingly unbeatable corrupt Protectorate and TechCore forces arrayed against them, with plenty of action and verve.
Each book in the series features a different couple. The overarching story is of a badass group of female soldiers who have teamed up with a rogue assassin squad of men who escaped the control of the Protectorate. Now the men and women are each finding romantic partners from the other squad, whilst on their joint crusade to survive extermination and help the oppressed citizens around them. All of the men and women are uber competent, and I am so here for it!
Rocha's worldbuilding is marvelous. The world has been leveled by wars fought over energy, disintegrating infrastructure, and then the final finishing touch of a solar flare to make things abysmal. Governments have splintered, and the world is now controlled by various evil corporations who are using science to create soldiers that are off-the-charts strong, fast, and intelligent. The things that the various characters have been gruesomely modified to be able to do makes for such entertaining fighting.
The best thing about Rocha books though, even better than the amazing worldbuilding and awesome action, is the found family and fierce emotional connections of our protagonists. These men and women will go to the mat- for each other- and their communities. The sense of palpable connections, despite all their traumas, is beautiful.
DANCE WITH THE DEVIL is another strong entry in Rocha's dystopian fantasy Mercenary Librarians series. Some of the secondary characters are getting pulled further into the rebellion group, making the story even richer, and providing us people for future romantic pairings, I'm sure. DANCE WITH THE DEVIL serves up engaging characters, impressive fighting, and lots of stirring revolutionary maneuvering. Fantasy. Mercenary Librarians is a series that continues to delight me, and I strongly recommend it.
Tobias Richter, the fearsome VP of Security of the TechCorps is dead. The puppetmaster is gone and the organization is scrambling to maintain control by ruthlessly limiting Atlanta's access to resources, hoping to quell rebellion. Our band of mercenary librarians have decided that the time for revolution has come.
Maya uses her wealth of secrets to weaken the TechCorps from within. Dani strikes from the shadows, picking off the chain of command one ambush at a time. And Nina is organizing their community—not just to survive, but to fight back. When Maya needs to make contact with a sympathetic insider, Dani and Rafe are the only ones with the skill-set and experience to infiltrate the highest levels of the TechCorps. They'll go deep undercover in the decadent, luxury-soaked penthouses on the Hill.
Bringing Dani face-to-face with the man who turned her into a killer. And forcing Rafe to decide how far he'll go to protect both of his families—the one he was born to, and the one he made for himself.
Victory will break the back of Power. Failure will destroy Atlanta.
