If you’re looking for a story that’s going to leave you smiling, Katherine Center has your back. In THE BODYGUARD, we meet Hannah Brooks, a down on her luck Executive Protection Agent tasked with guarding A-list movie star Jack Stapleton - and she is not happy about it. Hannah Brooks is looking to get out of town, not be tied down by the job guarding Jack Stapleton. After her boyfriend breaks up with her on the heels of losing her mother, she’s ready to leave him and the state of Texas way behind her. But her boss has other ideas, and if Hannah wants a serious shot at the position she is competing with her ex for, she has to be in it to win it. So she falls in line.
First, you must reconcile yourself to the fact that this is not your average 'bodyguard' book - it's better! In true Center style, she brings a levity to serious issues that make things relatable to the reader, and Hannah's job was treated in a way that made it humorous and enjoyable. Her character was so endearing; she'd had a rough life, but she didn't let it get her down. It did change her in ways and close parts of her off, but that made her a character I loved rooting for! I appreciate the way Center writes female characters - they are emotional as well as top of their field, and it's so refreshing to see them feeling all the feels! I liked Jack's character as well. He was a fun-loving guy with a serious side, and his secret really added depth to his character and the story. His family dynamics were interesting to read about, and their journey was fantastic. Secondary characters on these pages were brought to life and given depth without eclipsing Hannah and Jack's story, and I felt like I knew them nearly as well as the main couple.
I adored the plot of this story and listening to it on twice the speed wasn't even fast enough for me. I was so excited to know what was going to happen next! My only critique would be the epilogue; the story felt complete without it. But even with that, this story was a huge win for me.
If you bring one book to the beach with you this summer, let it be THE BODYGUARD. I promise you won't be disappointed. And like Hannah, you'll feel all the feels!
Narration: Patti Murin narrated THE BODYGUARD, and she did a spectacular job! Her voice reflected perfectly what the characters were feeling, and she did a fantastic job with male characters as well as female. I am looking forward to listening to more from her in the future!
She’s got his back. Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker.
He’s got her heart. Jack Stapleton’s a household name—captured by paparazzi on beaches the world over, famous for, among other things, rising out of the waves in all manner of clingy board shorts and glistening like a Roman deity. But a few years back, in the wake of a family tragedy, he dropped from the public eye and went off the grid.
They’ve got a secret. When Jack’s mom gets sick, he comes home to the family’s Texas ranch to help out. Only one catch: He doesn’t want his family to know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah—against her will and her better judgment—finds herself pretending to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover. Even though her ex, like a jerk, says no one will believe it.
What could possibly go wrong??? Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies the heartbreak. Because it’s easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But protecting her own, long-neglected heart? That’s the hardest thing she’s ever done.
