Mystery Cozy

Paisley’s latest salvage job involves helping a neighbor by removing an old chicken coop in her yard. Paisley is hopeful she can use some of the wood for her business, and her neighbor is willing to give it to her in exchange for removing the chicken coop. The job is a small one, small enough that Paisley is even letting her son help with some of the initial prep work for a couple hours until his young attention span wanes. Typically, Paisley can find a few small treasures for her business buried after the removal of a building, but this time she’s found something much worse… a human bone. It’s going to take some research into the past to uncover this mystery!

FATAL FLOSS is the 8th book in the Stitches in Crime series but can easily be read as a standalone. The relationships between the characters has grown over the course of the series, but A.C.F. Bookens does a marvelous job at providing sufficient back story so that new readers can jump right in and enjoy. The townspeople and friends of Paisley quickly become like old friends as A.C.F. Bookens draws us into her fictional town of Octonia.

The mystery of the bones in FATAL FLOSS focuses more on the past than the present, and I love how Paisley researches both the area and the people of Octonia. Some of the information she finds is both surprising and rewarding- no spoilers here but the story of Johnny Lanford is thoroughly satisfying. The ending twist on modern day events took me a bit by surprise but oh wow, has A.C.F. crafted a novel full of history, mystery, and social issues that is sure to knock the socks off of readers!

I love the small-town support in FATAL FLOSS! Not only does the town come together to help local business owner Mika out with her financial dreams, but they do so in a fun way. I have heard of yarn bombing and seen pictures where it’s been done but have never actually seen it in person and love that A.C.F. Bookens incorporated this into her plot. Even better, the town is also working to raise money and knit or crochet squares for Warm Up America, a wonderful real-life cause that donates blankets to people who are dealing with homelessness.

A.C.F. Bookens has yet another fascinating cozy mystery for readers who love seeing how the past still influences the present. I can’t wait to dig into the earlier books as I’m quickly becoming a fan of the Stitches in Crime series. If you love cozy mysteries, genealogy, history, social issues, or just a darned good story, then FATAL FLOSS is exactly what you are looking for!

SUMMARY

A morning visit to the chicken coop is supposed to be a delight, not a fright.

On the day when Paisley Sutton goes to salvage barn board from an old chicken coop on her neighbor’s land, she thinks the worst thing she may find is rotten eggs. Little does she know, she’s about to unearth a mystery that has lingered for decades. She can’t help but research the story, but when she does, she finds far more than she hoped.

Does she really want to know the whole story, or would she rather bury it again?
