Holy hot springs, this romance book has action and no mistake. Beckett Duke has been released from custody, after police evidence against him was declared improper and his case was dismissed. He’s on his way home to his new wife Laney Holland, to assure her he didn’t kill the lady he found dead. He was FRAMED IN DEATH VALLEY.
The new Desert Justice series begins at a small resort hotel called Hotsprings Hotel. If the current lack of guests due to bad publicity continues, Beckett and Laney may as well own fifteen acres of rocks near Furnace Falls in Death Valley. One new arrival seems suspicious by contrast, but maybe she’s just not fussy. The townsfolk resent Beckett’s release as they believe he killed Pauline Sanderson, a local lady. Pauline's brother Kenny is a known felon currently on parole, and he’s taking his indignation a step further and more violently. Hoping to prove his innocence to his skeptical cousin Jude on the police force, Brandon decides to ask for a divorce to protect his wife and unborn child.
I love the outdoor scenes especially, a trail ride, cookout and stargazing outing providing the perfect scenario to show us history and the desiccating heat. An old borax mine comes into the tale. Hostile acts and random menacing incidents occur. Brandon can’t leave Laney unguarded but the news that they are expecting is a complication, and this throws extra requirements and scenes into the mix, making an enjoyable blend of characters and locations. Everything must be built around the heat and dryness, the wildlife, and prickly plants.
Dana Mentick is Canadian, and I have previously enjoyed her romantic suspense stories. FRAMED IN DEATH VALLEY is fast-paced and carries internal struggles as well as external, with some unexpected character development and nice touches. As this is an inspirational story, I find it suitable for older teens or adults. We can all learn from the actions – are we too swift to judge others, are we supportive, do we forgive? And we can learn from the courage shown by people enduring desperate situations. If you are looking for a romance thriller set in summer heat and wild scenery, FRAMED IN DEATH VALLEY will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended.
Framed for a murder he didn’t commit, firefighter Beckett Duke gave up on everything—including his marriage to spirited Laney Holland. That is, until Laney’s life is threatened. Knowing the real killer is still at large, Beckett now has one purpose: protecting the woman he loves…and their unborn child. But sometimes an innocent man’s second chance comes with a deadly price.
