The Christmas Escape is the latest title from Sarah Morgan who has moved a bit away from pure romance to more family, friendship themed stories in recent years; which I enjoy and love as much as I did her Romance - Harlequin ones.
This story is about two friends Christy and Alix, who both come from dysfunctional families and hence their need to escape especially around Christmas time which ironically they both enjoy celebrating. Best friends Alix and Christy know everything there is to know about each other in their friendship which started when they were pretty young. As expected the dynamic of their friendship shifts towards change when Christy gets married to Seb, someone about whom Alix isn’t sure of as a person right for her friend. Things change and from sharing every bit happening in their lives both friends maintain a status quo and start bottling up their emotions.
However, planning a trip to Lapland to spend Christmas in snow heaven and in the midst of Northern Lights with a family twist for Christy makes things come to a head and out in the open for the friends. Will they enjoy this Christmas escape they have been planning since childhood or do their bottled emotions and issues make this a snow filled trap for them?
To start off I want to mention there is a lot of angst especially in Alix's character at the start of the story right up till they leave for Lapland. The angst in Alix and the way Christy strives for perfection created an atmosphere of angst and a bit of anxiety which was overwhelming for me for part of the reading time. However soon the angst settles into a sweet, delicious agony of romantic banter, fun in the snow and finally when the friends talk out all they have been avoiding emotionally.
The setting, Lapland, northern lights, a young child to diffuse the awkward moments and serious times was all brilliant especially with the festive, Christmas element. The setting was a character in itself which represented the unresolved issues of the characters as they maneuvered their new, changing relationships. It all ends in happy, romantic and light hearted Christmas celebration the friends dreamt of all along.
One thing is for sure you will enjoy all the emotional as well as the light hearted moments in this wonderful story which is so much more than just spending a holiday, Christmas at that, in a stunning location filled with nature's beauty and brilliance.
Sarah Morgan does Christmas books well and it is a treat to read and look forward to her books at this time of the year. You know you are in for an enjoyable reading time for the holidays and the cozy winter evenings.
This Christmas, be whisked away by USA Today bestselling author Sarah Morgan in this uplifting novel of friendship, the festive season, and risking everything for the biggest gift of all...
It was supposed to be Christy Sullivan’s perfect Christmas getaway—a trip to Lapland with her family and best friend, Alix. But facing a make-or-break marriage crisis, Christy desperately needs time alone with her husband. Her solution? Alix can take Christy’s little daughter to Lapland, and they will reunite there for Christmas Day. It’s a big ask, but what else are friends for?
There’s nothing Alix won’t do for Christy. But Christy’s request to save Christmas is giving Alix sleepless nights. She knows something is wrong, but for the first time ever, Christy isn’t talking. And even the Arctic temperatures in Lapland aren’t enough to dampen the seriously inconvenient sizzle Alix is developing for Zac, a fellow guest and nemesis from her past.
As secrets unravel and unexpected romance shines under the northern lights, can Christy and Alix’s Christmas escape give them the courage to fight for the relationships they really want, and save the precious gift of each other’s friendship?
