Romance Western

So now we get the story of Brice McAllister the third brother to have his own tale in the McAllister Brother series by Julia Justiss. I have had the pleasure of reviewing now all the stories in this wonderful series. Julia Justiss can absolutely charm the pants off anyone with her characters. Nevermore apparent than in this series starring three amazing, charming, and dare I say, gallant gentlemen ranchers.

Brice McAllister is THE RANGER, a tough Texas Ranger, an ex-military man who is remarkably strong in so many areas. None more so than his strength of character. Brice and his brothers were actually raised by his widowed father and his mother’s cousin Miss Dorothy. It is so apparent that Miss Dorothy raised these boys with a great deal of love and inured in each of them an everlasting sense of respect for the land, animals, men, and women.

Now with his brothers all settled down with their respective wives Brice is finding himself looking forward to being back home in Whiskey River whenever possible. His home base has been Austin but that is where he works, not where his heart is. Coming back home he finds that the family ranch has been under some tension with strange events that have put their animals in jeopardy. His ranger self kicks into high gear as he is determined to get to the bottom of it. The future of the ranch could be in peril, not to mention the well-being of his family.

While back at home Brice somehow manages to divide his time between family, some friends, and a brand-new friend Mary. Mary is a bit of a challenge and a mystery. As the reference librarian, Mary had found a way to become invisible in her new hometown. But she couldn’t help but develop strong feelings for her new neighbors, especially their young little girl Bunny.

Bunny becomes the catalyst, or shall I say matchmaker, for the quiet, shy Mary and the ranger Brice that she absolutely adores. These are Bunny’s favorite people. It was inevitable that they spend time together, now it is up to them to see if there is any real future in their growing friendship.

There is something dark and threatening in Mary’s past. Brice senses it each time he tries to get closer to her. Each step in their friendship is hard-fought. Lucky for Mary, Brice isn’t the type that gives up too easily. But Brice knows that this is a challenge that he needs to win. His heart is hanging in the balance.

THE RANGER is a great conclusion to a delightful series about folks that easily make their way into your heart, just as Julia Justiss designed. Along the way you just might learn some wonderful things about ranching, gardening, wines, and foods. Julia Justiss plants delightful little tidbits along the way as you learn about her characters. Fans of Julia Justiss and her Regency books will equally enjoy themselves in discovering her Western tales. Julia Justiss has illustrated her awarding winning literary talents in several genres much to the delight of her fans.

SUMMARY

He can’t resist a puzzle…

When Texas Ranger Brice McAllister spies a sexy woman in short shorts gardening in her backyard, he can’t help but flirt. She shuts him down hard, and Brice is astonished when he realizes this alluring woman is also the aloof and dowdy librarian—complete with thick-framed glasses and a shapeless dress—who helped him research land deeds earlier that day. He’s instantly intrigued and sets to discover more—namely, why she’s clearly hiding herself.

She can’t attract attention...

After one side of her crime family is involved in her fiancé’s death, Maria Giordano puts half a continent between herself and her L.A. home and family. She moves to Whiskey River and reinvents herself as “Mary,” a serious and plain librarian. Her only indulgence is her garden and cooking with her neighbor’s young daughter. And then she meets Brice.

Maria has every reason to avoid and resent a man with a badge, but when she needs protection, the last man she thinks she can trust is the first one she turns to.
