Gena Showalter returns with a brand new Paranormal Romance series called Immortal Enemies. This time this series features the fae and they aren’t like the fairytale-like creatures that many of us believe them to be. Showalter’s style is much darker in this book than it is in her usual books. Tragic events with tragic characters are very much what this book is about, so if you’re into violence, trauma and drama, then I think you’ll enjoy this book.

There’s a lot of attention to detail in this book and especially the writing. I was impressed with the way Showalter was able to change her style to create a totally different book from her others. However, I felt like I couldn’t connect with some of the characters, the hero, in particular. Since the concept is of revenge, I just found that I couldn’t quite relate to what he was going through. He felt too cold and ruthless that the romance didn’t burn as brightly as I would have liked. However, I kept reading and I’m glad that I did because there was some thawing of his character once the romance bloomed.

Showalter does a great job with the worldbuilding in this book, so if you’re looking for a new world to dive into and lose yourself, HEARTLESS is a perfect summer read to help you escape reality.
