Amish | Mystery Police Procedural

Kate Burkholder long ago left the Amish life, but she is still a part of that world as the Chief of Police of Painters Mill. When a woman is found at the local motel, Katie arrives and finds that the victim is Rachael Schwartz. She too had left the life and moved away. Now Katie must find out what brought this FALLEN woman back and who killed her with such violent rage.

Katie knew Rachael - a young woman who was a rebel and just as bad at being Amish as she herself had been, but nothing pointed to the reason for her death. As she investigates, she finds that things were not what they seem and though Rachael had been wild - something happened that made it impossible for her to stay with her family. The truth behind her leaving seems to be what more than one person wants to keep a secret and the danger to Katie ramps up as she investigates this woman's life. With the truth Katie can understand Rachael's past and present - and the danger she unknowingly brought to herself.

FALLEN is a fascinating look at the Amish, the English and how evil knows no bounds. I have enjoyed a number of the Katie Burkholder books by author Linda Castillo and this one ranks right at the top. The life of the Amish is intriguing and to watch a modern, gun-toting woman who was once a part of that world work to defend and protect makes a page-turning read.

There are some colorful characters involved not just the Amish, some who do not want to talk to Katie but know they must, but at every turn, there is someone interesting. Where else would you find policemen with names like Pickles and Glock, who are highly protective of the chief? There is also her long time lover John Tomasetti, who works for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and helps keep Katie sane and on the right track. The description of the area, the farms, the animals, the people, and the way of life, bring FALLEN to life.

I have to admit that the killer took me by surprise as I suspected someone else throughout most of FALLEN, but that is always the sign of a very good writer. Ms. Castillo puts in the twists and turns and fools you until she leads you to where she meant for you to be all along. A very well-written mystery and view of life.

SUMMARY

In New York Times bestselling author Linda Castillo’s new thriller, a rebellious Amish woman leaves the Plain life, but the secrets she takes with her will lead Chief of Police Kate Burkholder down a dark path to danger and death.

When a young woman is found murdered in a Painters Mill motel, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is shocked to discover she once knew the victim. Rachael Schwartz was a charming but troubled Amish girl who left the fold years ago and fled Painters Mill. Why was she back in town? And who would kill her so brutally?

Kate remembers Rachael as the only girl who was as bad at being Amish as Kate was—and those parallels dog her. But the deeper Kate digs into Rachael Schwartz’s life, the more she’s convinced that Rachael’s dubious reputation was deserved. As a child, Rachael was a rowdy rulebreaker whose decision to leave devastated her parents and best friend. As an adult, she was charismatic and beautiful, a rabble-rouser with a keen eye for an opportunity no matter who got in her way. Her no-holds-barred lifestyle earned her a lot of love and enemies aplenty—both English and Amish.

As the case heats to a fever pitch and long-buried secrets resurface, a killer haunts Painters Mill. Someone doesn’t want Rachael’s past—or the mysteries she took with her to the grave—coming to light. As Kate digs deeper, violence strikes again, this time hitting close to home. Will Kate uncover the truth and bring a murderer to justice? Or will a killer bent on protecting a terrible past, stop her once and for all—and let the fallen be forgotten?
