"A trip through the weirdness of Florida..."

Tropic of Stupid

Mystery | Thriller

Serge Storms is on a mission. Not only is he determined to visit all of the state parks in Florida and receive his stamp, but he’s also following up on his DNA heritage results to visit previously unknown family members. Meanwhile, a Florida law enforcement officer has also followed up with a DNA heritage site in search of a serial killer. What happens when their paths cross?

The opening scene of TROPIC OF STUPID is perhaps one of the funniest I’ve ever read. It’s pure Florida Man logic at its finest! Part of Tim Dorsey’s appeal is his ability to encapsulate the absolute weirdness of Florida and combine it the stunning beauty and intriguing history of the state. And oh boy is that opening scene Florida at its weirdest!

Tim Dorsey takes us into the Keys and I love that we visit No Name Key, Big Pine Key, and the key deer in TROPIC OF STUPID. As many times as I’ve visited the Keys and explored different areas, I learned a few new places I want to visit from Tim Dorsey and I definitely want to know if that unmarked gravel road leading to a quarry on No Name Key exists. But that’s half the fun of the Serge Storms series as Tim Dorsey takes us into both the well known and the lesser known places of Florida.

TROPIC OF STUPID is the 24th book in the Serge Storms series. Each book in this series is meant to stand alone and highlights a different aspect of Florida while following Serge in his Dexter-like serial killer follies. Serge is smart, diabolical, and yet oddly enough has a sense of honesty and honor about certain things. I wouldn’t want to actually spend time around Serge, but I love following his crazy journeys across Florida and can’t wait to see what is in store for him next!

SUMMARY

Devoted Floridaphile Serge Storms is a lover of history, so he’s decided to investigate his own using one of those DNA services from late-night TV. Excited to construct a family tree, he and Coleman hit the road to meet his kin. Along the way, he plans to introduce Coleman to the Sunshine State’s beautiful parks where he can brush up on his flora, fauna, and wildlife, and more importantly, collect the missing stamps for his park passport book.

But as the old saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far . . .  Serge is thrilled to discover he may be related to a notorious serial killer who’s terrorized the state for twenty years and never been caught. Which one of his newfound relatives will be the one to help him hunt down this deranged maniac? Serge doesn’t know that a dogged investigator from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also hot on the trail.

Then Serge meets a park ranger who’s also longing to make a family re-connection. But all is not as it appears on the surface, and Serge’s newfound friendship in the mysterious swamps of Florida may lead to deadly results.

Finding his own relatives has made Serge understand the importance of family. Of course he’ll do anything to help . . .
