Fantasy Dark | Romance Fantasy

Book 10 in The Black Jewels saga, THE QUEEN’S BARGAIN by fantasy author Anne Bishop comes almost a decade after book 9 in the series. I, along with many other faithful fans, have been thrilled that Bishop is returning to the Black Jewels world. Bishop writes dark and edgy books, and The Black Jewels books are somewhat erotically charged as well. I loved the first 9 books in the series, but THE QUEEN’S BARGAIN does not compel me as much as earlier books. This book can be read as a standalone, but knowledge of the Black Jewels universe will enhance the reader’s appreciation of the story.

There are interleaving tales here of multiple couples. First, we have Jillian, who is the erstwhile ward of Warlord Prince Daemon. She is pursued by Lord Dillon, a male I think should not have been forgiven for his behavior. Dillon was tricked into dropping out of training as an escort to instead become the lover of a duplicitous young lady and is now surviving as best he can by blackmailing the families of other young women who are trying to take sexual advantage of him. His behavior towards Jillian is inexcusable, though, and I’m surprised at Daemon and Lucivar’s response to him.

We also follow Warlord Prince Daemon and his wife Surreal. Prince Daemon’s marriage is splintering, and Surreal is not a sympathetic character here as they struggle to save their marriage. This couple provides a lot of the tension in the book, and I am definitely Team Daemon here. Daemon’s brother Warlord Prince Lucivar and his wife Marian provide a loving contrast to the other two main couples showcased. I so enjoy Daemon and his brother Lucivar’s interactions. They are such complex characters, and their teamwork and loyalty is very touching.

Bishop is a fantastic author, and I gobble up everything that she writes. Although not her strongest work, THE QUEEN’S BARGAIN is nonetheless an enjoyable read, and I appreciate the return to this world of fantasy and dark romance. I look forward to seeing the Black Jewels stories continue.

SUMMARY

POWER HAS A PRICE. SO DOES LOVE.

Return to the dark, sensual, and powerful world of the Black Jewels in this long-awaited new story in the New York Times bestselling fantasy saga.

After a youthful mistake, Lord Dillon's reputation is in tatters, leaving him vulnerable to aristo girls looking for a bit of fun. To restore his reputation and honor, he needs a handfast--a one-year contract of marriage. He sets his sights on Jillian, a young Eyrien witch from Ebon Rih, who he believes has only a flimsy connection to the noble society that spurned him. Unfortunately for Dillon, he is unaware of Jillian's true connections until he finds himself facing Lucivar Yaslana, the volatile Warlord Prince of Ebon Rih.

Meanwhile, Surreal SaDiablo's marriage is crumbling. Daemon Sadi, the Warlord Prince of Dhemlan, recognizes there is something wrong between him and Surreal, but he doesn't realize that his attempt to suppress his own nature in order to spare his wife is causing his mind to splinter. To save Daemon, and the Realm of Kaeleer if he breaks, help must be sought from someone who no longer exists in any of the Realms--the only Queen powerful enough to control Daemon Sadi. The Queen known as Witch.

As Jillian rides the winds of first love with Dillon, Daemon and Surreal struggle to survive the wounds of a marriage turned stormy--and Lucivar has to find a way to keep everyone in his family safe...even from each other.
