Hannah always felt that her marriage to Joel was pretty good. They had two children, a lovely home. Until the day that Hannah finds out that he had cheated on her. Joel claims it meant nothing, and only happened one time.
Now Hannah must make a huge decision. Joel is begging forgiveness; he says he will do anything to save their marriage even go see a counselor. Hannah has come up with a better idea, she is going to have an affair. Now she has to find someone. Hannah goes on several dating apps. But nothing jumps out at her. Joel, on the other hand, agrees to this, but he is not happy about it.
While all this is going on in their lives, they also have the responsibility of taking care of Joel’s father who is in a nursing home. While Hannah sees him often, Joel not so much. They are having problems with him as he seems to be really depressed. Hannah speaks a lot to Rueben who takes care of him. Hannah has made the decision to have her affair with Rueben. Now the question is will she and can her marriage be saved?
This is the first book I have read by Elizabeth Laban. I really enjoyed it. Laban seems to get right into the problems that Hannah and Joel are facing. Laban made me feel sorry for both of them. Who really is wrong in this whole mess? Of course, it seems like Joel, but would Hannah having an affair really help?
Laban does add some humor to this story. From the beginning, I was hooked on this but once again I read it too fast and was disappointed it was over. This book is a great book to get and relax and enjoy as it gets colder and snow is here.
SUMMARY
When she finds out her husband cheated, Hannah Bent thinks her marriage is over. Isn’t that what happens after an affair? But she’s seen friends divorce, and it’s not pretty. Plus, she and Joel have kids and an otherwise-happy life, and she still loves him, although begrudgingly.
Furious and feeling stuck, she suggests having her own affair to even the score. Joel, desperate for forgiveness, agrees. But does she really want to go through with it? And how exactly does a married mother of two get back in the dating pool? Many awkward dates follow until she finds a deep and unexpected connection where she was least looking for it.
Just as she thinks she’s made a decision, her journey to happiness is waylaid by storms of doubt. But the important thing is that she’s finally figuring out what she truly wants for herself, and she understands that whatever choice she makes must be hers and hers alone.
