Susanna had a previous life; she was married to Neil and had two children, Jake and Emily. That was fourteen years ago. Now Susanna is a therapist and has her daughter Emily with her. So you might ask yourself, why the change in her life? Fourteen years ago, her son Jake turned into a completely different boy. No, it wasn't just the teenage years; it was more that he was obsessed with his teacher Ms. Birch. Susanna couldn't deal with the way people looked at her and she fled with Emily.
This leads to what happens next. A young man walks into her office, seeking help. Adam tells her that he has a lot of problems in his life and needs her to help him. As the session goes on, Susanna is dumbstruck when Adam hands her a picture of her daughter. Susanna finds out that he has Emily and wouldn't tell her where. As the session moves on, Adam tells more of his story. It seems that somehow he knows all about what happened to Jake. Susanna is beside herself, she doesn't care about his life, and she just needs her daughter back.
Simon Lelic not only writes a taut suspense novel, but also a story of what happens to a lost boy. I have to say, never would have expected what came out of this story. Lelic takes you on a story from Susanna's side, Emily's side, and the story that Adam wants them both to know.
In a way, you will feel sorry for Adam, then you get mad at him, but in the end, you realize he is nothing but a lost boy. So if you like books that take you on a ride this is the one for you.
A new spine-tingling thriller from the author of The New Neighbors that takes place over the course of a therapy session, in which neither patient nor therapist are who they claim to be.Two liars. One room. No way out.
Susanna Fenton has a secret. Fourteen years ago she left her identity behind, reinventing herself as a therapist and starting a new life. It was the only way to keep her daughter safe. But when a young man, Adam Geraghty, walks into her office, claiming he needs Susanna's help but asking unsettling questions, she begins to fear that her secret has been discovered.
