Thirty-something Julie Burns works hard trying to make partner in an L.A. entertainment law firm. She and her associates spend their time avoiding the boss, gossiping about their love lives and occasionally taking a case to court. As more of her friends are getting married and settling down, Julie concludes that she must be romantically challenged. A decent guy must be out there waiting to sweep her off her feet, so she embarks on a dating adventure to find him.
Julie tries online dating, speed dating, blind dates, lunch dates and a dating service for busy professionals, hoping that if she meets enough guys, she'll statistically increase her chances of finding happily-ever-after. These memorable dates take her to the gym on a Friday night, twice to the emergency room and up in a scary two-seater plane that can't find a place to land.
The only guy she isn't pursuing, a cute bartender named Joe, keeps popping up -- at weddings, parties and social events. Julie can't quite remember where she met Joe, but she agrees to have lunch with him since he claims he has something that belongs to her. Joe used to work as an actor, so Julie knows they can never be more than friends, since Julie has sworn off dating wannabes. When Joe returns an intimate piece of Julie's clothing, though, she couldn't be more embarrassed. Instead of just blushing gracefully, she sees red and leaves angry, which will probably hurt her chances of getting a second date.
In her debut, Beth Orsoff creates fun characters with realistic jobs and supporting friends who are cool and interesting, but don't steal the scenes. While a magazine article about the overabundance of single women isn't original, the Tickle-Me-Elmo that lives on Julie's couch kept me laughing. Any single girl can tell you that the dating scene is tricky, but if you've ever felt ROMANTICALLY CHALLENGED, you'll enjoy this chick-lit story!
